Growing consciousness for health and wellness has been driving rapid changes in what an individual consumes on a daily basis. So certainly, healthy eating is crucial due to its profound impact on well-being. It supports physical health, mental clarity, and longevity, reducing the risk of chronic diseases and enhancing overall quality of life.
And so, learning to create nutritious and healthy food including bakery products is crucial. It empowers individuals to make informed dietary choices, reduces the consumption of processed and unhealthy options, and supports a lifestyle focused on good nutrition, contributing to long-term health and vitality.

Keeping this aspect in mind, Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar, organised a one-day workshop for the students to learn different methods of making nutritious and healthy bakery products. For the same, students from the Home Science Department at ACFA visited the National Finishing and Cookery Institute (NFCI).
Mrs. Anjana Joshi, Director at NFCI, Chef Kamal, Rohit and Gursimran, under the theme ‘Bake Your Own Bread’, conducted an engaging interactive session for the students while teaching them basic techniques of baking like how to knead the dough for bread, how to make stuffed and nutritious breads with millet and so on. The chefs further shared how every individual can make bread a part of their daily life, provided they learn the right technique to choose the perfect bread, which is healthy and nutritious yet tasty.

Expressing her views, Dr Neerja Dhingra, Principal at ACFA said, “Home Science is a practical subject, in which it becomes necessary to give practical knowledge to the students, to make them proficient in their subject. Hence, from time to time, we organise such workshops which help young aspiring learners to learn and become proficient in their skills.

Adding further, Dr. Monica Anand, Head of the Department of Home Science emphasised, “Being a practical-oriented subject, Home Science equips the students with skills and knowledge required not only for personal and home care, but also to become food entrepreneurs. These skills are a pathway to make them self-reliant. This workshop was organised to provide an opportunity to the students of home science to learn from professional chefs from NFCI, Jalandhar.
It focused on learning the skill and art of making varieties of nutritious millet-based cakes, healthy muffins and favourite breads. Baking skills are in great demand in the current scenario as the market demands variety and aesthetic presentation of cakes and breads. Students gain from such workshops as they get tips and training from chefs. It was a good learning experience for students.”
