Meet Ar Aishwariya Prakash, an architect based in Mumbai and an alumnus of Apeejay School, Nerul. She believes that great design should create humane, meaningful spaces at every scale, from intimate homes to expansive urban landscapes. As she embarks on establishing her design practice, her vision is to build a team of passionate architects dedicated to thoughtful spatial design, guided by a deep commitment to ecology, sustainability, and people-centric living.
What inspired you to pursue architecture?
Growing up, I never saw myself following conventional career paths like medicine or engineering. Instead, I was drawn to creative pursuits, with art class being one of the few spaces where I could truly express myself. Architecture felt like the perfect blend of creativity, science, and the humanities. I followed that instinct, knowing it would require dedication and hard work, and I’ve never looked back.
What does a typical day in the life of an architect look like?
No two days in architecture are ever the same. Depending on the project, a day may involve coordination meetings, site supervision, design discussions, or brainstorming sessions; sometimes all at once. At its core, the role is a dynamic blend of creative design thinking and practical problem-solving, and that balance is what makes it so rewarding.
Share your journey from Apeejay School Nerul to your professional journey.
My journey through school and college has been one of tremendous growth. As a socially reserved child, I found a strong foundation at Apeejay School, where I developed values such as diligence, teamwork, leadership, and a curiosity that spanned the humanities, literature, and sciences. These qualities proved invaluable in architecture and helped me navigate the opportunities, challenges, and setbacks of college life. Together, those experiences built the resilience and confidence that continue to guide me as a professional today.
What are some of the projects or achievements you are proud of so far?
I specialise in residential architecture and interiors, a field where design has a deeply personal impact on everyday life. One achievement that remains especially meaningful to me is seeing my first built project appear on satellite imagery. It was a powerful moment, realising that something I had envisioned and worked on now existed as a tangible space for people to live in and experience. It was a quiet yet profound milestone, and no matter how many projects follow, that first one will always hold a special place in my journey.
Lesson learnt.
This journey has also taught me something valuable: To appreciate every small win, regardless of conventional standards. Architecture can be slow, demanding, and deeply personal work. So when so much of our heart goes into the work, the fulfilment it brings upon completion is something else entirely.
What are some of your fondest memories from school?
One memory that stands out is the Teachers’ Day celebrations, which can only be described as joyful chaos. Senior students would step into the role of teachers for the day, while the teachers themselves got a chance to relax and enjoy the programmes organised in their honour. There was something truly special about this role reversal that made the day unforgettable. Looking back, I also deeply appreciate the teachers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make such experiences possible. Their dedication played a huge part in creating some of our fondest school memories, and it is something I remain grateful for.
