Listening, Storytelling and the Future of Radio: Insights from RJ Saatvik Arora

As part of its ongoing orientation programme, Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication (AIMC) hosted an engaging session for its new students with RJ Saatvik Arora, RJ, Radio Mirchi, and an alumnus of AIMC. Drawing from his experience in radio and his journey from the institute to the industry, RJ Saatvik Arora introduced students to the evolving audio landscape and the emerging opportunities for media professionals.

RJ Saatvik Arora began the session by sharing his journey from being a student at AIMC to establishing himself as a radio professional with Radio Mirchi. He then initiated an interactive discussion with the students by asking, “Is radio dying?” The question sparked an engaging exchange of views, with students sharing their perspectives on the relevance of radio in today’s rapidly changing media environment.
During the session, RJ Saatvik Arora explained how the audio industry has evolved significantly in recent years. He highlighted that the changing media landscape has created numerous opportunities for young professionals, extending beyond traditional radio to include podcasts, digital audio and various streaming platforms. He encouraged students to look at the audio industry from a broader perspective and recognise the emerging career opportunities within it.
Emphasising the importance of effective communication in media, RJ Saatvik Arora identified listening as one of the most essential skills for a media professional. He explained that understanding people, their emotions and their stories is fundamental to meaningful communication. According to him, developing the ability to listen deeply enables media professionals to connect with audiences and tell stories more effectively.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, during which RJ Saatvik Arora responded to students’ questions and shared insights from his professional journey. He encouraged the students to approach their careers with discipline, curiosity and passion, while remaining open to the evolving opportunities within the audio and media industry. The session provided an engaging perspective on the continuing relevance of radio and the expanding possibilities in the world of audio.
