Cooking up creativity without fire at Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri

Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri organised an engaging ‘Cooking Without Fire’ activity for Class VI students, providing them with an enriching opportunity to learn through creativity, collaboration and hands-on experience. The activity was conducted in keeping with the spirit of NEP 2020, which emphasises experiential, competency-based and holistic learning.

The classroom came alive as students enthusiastically explored the art of preparing nutritious and appealing food without using fire. Working with safe and easily available ingredients, they prepared a variety of creative dishes and snacks. Their innovative presentations, colourful combinations and thoughtful garnishing reflected their imagination, attention to detail and growing confidence. 

Beyond culinary creativity, the activity served as an effective platform for developing essential life skills. Students worked in groups, distributed responsibilities and supported one another throughout the process. This encouraged communication, cooperation, leadership and problem-solving skills while teaching them the importance of planning and working as a team.

The activity also promoted inclusive participation, allowing students to contribute according to their interests, abilities and comfort levels. Through the practical experience, they learnt that food preparation involves much more than simply making a dish, it requires organising, measuring, arranging, presenting and making responsible choices.

The session further sensitised students towards the importance of healthy eating, hygiene, food safety and responsible use of resources. By connecting classroom learning with everyday experiences, the activity made education more meaningful, enjoyable and relevant.

The activity was conducted under the guidance of In-charge Mrs Poonam Sharma, with the active participation of senior teachers Mr Sajjan Singh and Mr Pankaj, who joined the students and encouraged them throughout the event.

Principal of the school, Dr Vineet Vasishtha blessed the students and appreciated their enthusiasm, creativity and teamwork. He encouraged them to embrace practical learning opportunities and develop skills that would help them become confident, independent and responsible individuals. “The “Cooking Without Fire” activity for Class VI was a wonderful example of experiential and joyful learning. I appreciate the creativity, confidence, teamwork and enthusiasm displayed by our students. Such activities reflect the vision of NEP 2020 by connecting learning with real-life experiences and essential life skills. The ‘Cooking Without Fire’ activity beautifully reflected the objectives of NEP 2020 and 21st-century learning, demonstrating how education can extend beyond textbooks. The cheerful participation, creative dishes and collaborative spirit of the students made the activity a memorable and enriching learning experience.
