Recognising the importance of connecting classroom learning with professional practice, Apeejay School of Management (ASM) organised an insightful guest session on “Discounted Cash Flow Model: FCFF and FCFE”. This session aimed to provide students with a practical understanding of financial valuation techniques and their application in the corporate world.

The session was conducted by Ms. Saavika Tayal, Manager – Valuation, Macquarie Group, who brought valuable industry experience and professional insights to the discussion. The session focused on two important business valuation approaches—Free Cash Flow to Firm (FCFF) and Free Cash Flow to Equity (FCFE)—and helped students understand how these models support financial analysis and investment decision-making.

Beginning with the fundamentals, Ms. Tayal introduced students to the key concepts and components involved in developing FCFF and FCFE models. She explained how analysts estimate future cash flows, determine appropriate discount rates, calculate terminal value and ultimately arrive at an assessment of a company’s value.

A significant aspect of the session was understanding the distinction between the two valuation approaches. Students explored how FCFF focuses on cash flows available to all providers of capital, while FCFE considers cash flows available specifically to equity holders. Ms. Tayal also discussed the circumstances in which each model is most appropriately applied, helping students understand that selecting the right valuation methodology depends on the nature of the financial analysis being undertaken.

The session adopted a distinctly practical and industry-oriented approach, moving beyond theoretical definitions to demonstrate how financial modelling concepts are applied in real-world valuation assignments. By connecting academic concepts with professional practices, the interaction enabled students to appreciate the analytical thinking, financial understanding and judgement required in corporate valuation.

The guest session also provided students with a broader perspective on the role of valuation in financial decision-making. Understanding how businesses are valued is particularly relevant for professionals working in areas such as finance, investment banking, equity research and valuation advisory services. Exposure to such industry practices can help students develop a stronger understanding of the expectations and analytical skills required in these domains.

The interactive nature of the session further enriched the learning experience, giving students an opportunity to engage with an industry professional and gain insights into the practical application of financial concepts.

Overall, the session strengthened students’ understanding of financial modelling, corporate valuation and investment analysis, while demonstrating how classroom knowledge can be translated into professional practice. The initiative reaffirmed ASM’s commitment to providing industry-oriented learning experiences that prepare students to navigate the evolving demands of the financial sector with greater confidence and competence.
