Abhinav, an alumnus of Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication (AIMC), is currently working as a Video Production Executive at Youngun. His childhood fascination with films and visual storytelling evolved into a professional passion for filmmaking, editing and cinematography. At AIMC, hands-on projects and industry exposure helped him build technical expertise and confidence. Today, he transforms ideas into compelling visual stories while navigating the demands of advertising and content production.
Why AIMC for education?
I chose Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication because of its strong reputation in media education. I wanted a place where I could work with professional equipment and understand every aspect of media production rather than just studying theory.
AIMC provided exactly that. The institute encouraged creativity, teamwork, and hands-on experience, which helped me develop confidence both as a filmmaker and as a media professional.
How did your journey at AIMC prepare you for a career in video production and advertising?
My journey at AIMC gave me much more than technical knowledge. From scripting and directing to cinematography and editing, I had the opportunity to understand every stage of content creation. Working on multiple assignments and films helped me build discipline and professionalism, while also teaching me how to communicate ideas effectively. These experiences prepared me for the fast-paced environment of the advertising and production industry.
What has been your biggest learning while working as a Video Production Executive at Youngun?
The biggest learning has been understanding that creativity alone is not enough. In the professional world, creativity has to work alongside strategy, deadlines, client expectations, and teamwork.
Every project has strengthened my ability to communicate, adapt quickly, and keep improving through feedback.
How have the practical projects, shoots, and industry exposure at AIMC helped you in your current role?
The practical learning at AIMC made my transition into the industry much smoother. I was already familiar with planning shoots, handling cameras, coordinating with teams, and managing post-production workflows.
What skills do aspiring media students need to build if they want to succeed in the advertising and content production industry?
Apart from technical skills like editing, cinematography, and scripting, students should focus on storytelling. The industry evolves rapidly, so it’s important to stay updated with new technologies and trends, especially AI-powered creative tools and digital platforms. Building a strong portfolio, being open to feedback, and continuously learning are equally important.
What advice would you give to current AIMC students who dream of working with leading advertising and marketing agencies?
My advice would be to never wait for the perfect opportunity. Start creating today. Build projects outside the classroom, experiment with different styles, and keep improving your portfolio.
The industry values what you can create and how effectively you solve creative challenges. Be curious, stay consistent, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes because every project teaches something valuable.
Finally, advice from your seniors, have fun while doing your work guys, making mistakes is always better than having regrets later.
