Starting a new job is often a curious mix of excitement and uncertainty. You may know your role, understand your responsibilities and have a clear list of tasks, but there is another equally important part of settling in: getting to know the people around you. Building healthy relationships with colleagues can make your workplace experience more comfortable, collaborative and rewarding.
Start with a simple hello
You do not need an elaborate strategy to make a good first impression. A warm greeting, a brief introduction or a genuine “How are you?” can open the door to a conversation. Take the initiative to introduce yourself to colleagues, especially those you are likely to work with regularly. Small interactions can gradually turn unfamiliar faces into familiar ones.
Be genuinely curious
One of the easiest ways to connect with people is to show interest in them. Ask colleagues about their work, experiences or interests, and listen attentively to their responses. Avoid treating every conversation as an opportunity to talk about yourself. Genuine curiosity creates space for people to feel heard and appreciated.
Learn the workplace culture
Every organisation has its own rhythm, communication style and unwritten rules. Observe how colleagues interact, collaborate and communicate. Understanding these nuances can help you adapt without trying to change yourself completely. At the same time, remain authentic; building relationships does not mean pretending to be someone you are not.
Offer help—and know when to ask for it
Collaboration is one of the strongest foundations of workplace relationships. If a colleague needs assistance and you have the time or expertise to help, offer your support. Equally important, do not hesitate to ask for guidance when you need it. Asking a thoughtful question can demonstrate that you value your colleagues’ experience and are willing to learn.
Make time beyond the task list
Professional relationships do not have to revolve entirely around deadlines and meetings. Join a team lunch, participate in informal conversations or engage in workplace activities when possible. These moments can help you discover shared interests and build connections naturally.
Respect boundaries
Good relationships are built on mutual respect. Be mindful of colleagues’ time, communication preferences and personal boundaries. Avoid forcing friendships or expecting everyone to connect with you immediately. Meaningful workplace relationships develop gradually.
Most importantly, be consistent. A friendly introduction is only the beginning. Trust develops through everyday actions—being dependable, listening carefully, communicating respectfully and acknowledging others’ contributions.
Your new colleagues may initially be strangers, but every workplace relationship begins with a simple interaction. Approach those interactions with openness, empathy and authenticity, and you can gradually build a professional network that supports not only your career, but also your everyday experience at work.
