The Department of Home Science at Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar, recently conducted a vibrant and engaging series of skill enhancement classes titled ‘Hone Your Cooking Skills’. These sessions were tailored for students who had recently completed their Class 12 examinations and were keen on exploring the art of cooking. The workshop saw enthusiastic participation from students passionate about culinary arts and eager to refine their kitchen techniques.

Led by Dr. Monica Anand, Head of the Home Science Department, and supported by Ms. Chetna from the English Department, the sessions offered hands-on training across various aspects of cooking. From mastering the preparation of snacks and salads to experimenting with smoothies, desserts, and main course dishes, the students explored a wide array of recipes. The instructors not only focused on practical demonstrations but also helped students understand the basics of cooking, including food safety, kitchen hygiene, and ingredient selection.

Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra lauded the initiative, emphasizing its relevance in today’s fast-paced world. She noted that in an age where young people are increasingly drawn to processed and junk food, such skill enhancement classes serve as an eye-opener to the importance of nutritious and home-cooked meals. She stressed that educating the younger generation about a balanced diet is vital for their long-term well-being.

Dr. Dhingra also pointed out that the sessions went beyond simple recipe instruction. They introduced students to the finer points of food presentation, the diversity of regional cuisines, and the importance of kitchen safety. She highlighted how this knowledge empowers students to make healthier food choices and even prepare wholesome meals independently at home.

In addition to health benefits, Dr. Dhingra spoke about the rising scope of careers in the culinary arts. She encouraged students to view cooking not just as a hobby, but as a potential professional path. With the advent of food blogging, cloud kitchens, and home-based culinary ventures, she observed that today’s students could easily transform their passion into successful careers or entrepreneurial ventures.

The success of the event was credited to the efforts of Ms. Rajni Gupta and Dr. Seema Sharma, who played key roles in organizing and coordinating the classes. The college’s commitment to offering meaningful skill development opportunities continues to equip students with practical knowledge, creativity, and confidence.

Overall, the ‘Hone Your Cooking Skills’ workshop proved to be both educational and inspiring, helping students discover the joy and potential of culinary arts.
