In a step toward equipping educators with knowledge of emerging technologies, the HRD Cell of Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC) organised a Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on the topic “Machine Learning Foundations: From Data to Intelligence.” The programme aimed to provide faculty members with valuable insights into the growing field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) while exploring their practical applications in the real world.

The session was conducted by Mr. Rohit Verma, Assistant Professor, School of Engineering & Technology, who served as the resource person for the programme. The FDP witnessed enthusiastic participation from both teaching and non-teaching staff members, reflecting growing curiosity surrounding technological advancements in academia and industry.

The session commenced with a warm welcome of the resource person and participants. Setting the tone for the discussion, Mr. Verma highlighted the expanding role of AI and ML across sectors such as education, healthcare, finance, robotics, and industries, emphasising how these technologies have gradually become an integral part of daily life.

During the session, Mr. Verma explained the concept of Machine Learning and elaborated on its major categories, including supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning. To make the concepts relatable and engaging, he drew examples from popular films, referring to intelligent systems like JARVIS from Iron Man and Skynet from The Terminator series, helping participants understand how futuristic ideas of intelligence are increasingly becoming reality through AI technologies.

The FDP also focused on the fundamental components of Artificial Intelligence, including data algorithms, neural networks, computing power, and computer vision. Participants gained an understanding of how traditional programming differs from machine learning. While conventional programming relies on predefined rules and data to produce outputs, machine learning systems identify patterns from data and generate predictions or decisions autonomously.

The resource person further illustrated how machine learning is solving real-world problems in areas such as fraud detection, salary and property price prediction, spam filtering, recommendation systems, and medical diagnosis. These examples highlighted the growing dependence of organizations on AI-driven technologies to enhance efficiency and improve decision-making.

An insightful segment of the session focused on Deep Learning, where Mr. Verma explained the role of artificial neural networks in addressing complex tasks related to speech, images, and language. He also introduced participants to the concept of backpropagation, demonstrating how neural networks improve accuracy by learning from errors through optimization techniques.

The programme additionally explored Natural Language Processing (NLP) and its applications in technologies such as chatbots, language translation, sentiment analysis, voice assistants, and text summarization, offering participants a glimpse into the future of human-machine interaction.

The FDP concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, allowing participants to clarify concepts and discuss practical applications. Appreciating the insightful deliberations, Dr. Rajesh Bagga, Director, AIMETC, commended Mr. Rohit Verma for delivering an informative session. He also appreciated the efforts of the HRD Cell, Convener Dr. Anu Sahi, and Faculty Coordinator Ms. Preet Kamal Kaur for organising skill-oriented programmes that help faculty stay updated with evolving technologies and industry trends.
