The Model United Nations (MUN) Conferences have emerged as pivotal events in educational institutes worldwide. These events offer a unique platform for students to engage in diplomatic discourse, hone critical thinking skills, and cultivate a deeper understanding of global affairs.

Among these conferences, the Inter-school MUN gatherings hold a special place, serving not only as forums for intellectual exchange but also as vibrant celebrations of diplomacy and collaboration within school communities. The Falcon Model United Nations Conference serves as a dynamic platform where students engage in diplomatic simulations, mirroring real-world scenarios faced by global leaders.

As a testament to this tradition, Apeejay School, Noida recently hosted the sixth Annual Edition of the Falcon Model United Nations Conference. The two-day event was hled on April 23-24, 2024. The conference, designed as an academic simulation of the United Nations, strives to provide participants with a structured insight into the operations and policymaking processes of various countries’ governments. Its primary objective is to enhance the critical thinking, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution abilities of young intellectuals.

Ms Sharmila Bhowmick, a distinguished senior journalist, writer, and speaker, graced the Falcon Model United Nations Conference as the esteemed chief guest on Day 1. With an illustrious career spanning 23 years, she has made significant contributions to some of India’s most prominent newsrooms, including CNBC TV18, India Today Group, and the Times of India. Renowned as a TED speaker and personal development coach, Ms Bhowmick shared insights on resilience, agility, and sustainability, inspiring audiences worldwide.

On Day 2, the conference welcomed Mr Jenis Francis, a distinguished alumna from the batch of 1992, as the chief guest. Mr Francis brings over 25 years of legal expertise to the table and leads a prestigious boutique law firm in South Delhi. His extensive experience in the legal field adds invaluable depth to the conference, offering participants unique perspectives on the intersection of law, governance, and diplomacy.

The conference commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and a graceful invocation dance. Ms Ritu Kohli, the Principal of the school extended a warm welcome to the esteemed chief guest and emphasised how MUN fosters real-world problem-solving skills and empowers students to become effective change agents and future leaders. This was followed by the introduction of the organising committee of Falcon MUN 2024, unveiling the conference’s general and specific agendas for the two-day event.

Ms Bhowmick, expressed delight in participating in the enriching Falcon Model United Nations experience, highlighting its value in fostering international debate, negotiation, and diplomatic skills. The Secretary-General of the organising committee, Anshika Gandhi, officially declared the conference open that saw 400 delegates from schools across Delhi-NCR engaging in authentic UN simulations, fostering active diplomacy. The committees began with enthusiasm, addressing diverse contemporary agendas under competent executive board chairmanship.

The Falcon MUN Conference simulated nine committees, each focusing on critical global issues akin to those deliberated by the United Nations. These committees included the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), United Nations Security Council (UNSC), United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), All India Political Parties Meet (AIPPM), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Committee On The Peaceful Uses Of Outer Space (UNCOPOUS), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW), Stakeholders meet, and International Press (IP). The selected agendas mirrored real-world concerns, encompassing both broad and specific topics.

Day 2 also saw delegates transitioning into the final sessions of their committees. Following this, they received valuable feedback from their respective Executive Board members, aimed at enhancing their future engagements. After a warm welcome was extended to the esteemed chief guest, Mr Francis, the Vice-principal addressed those present. The audience was treated to a delightful musical performance by the talented students of Apeejay School, Noida.

The secretariat was honoured with certificates recognising their dedication to orchestrate a successful conference. Subsequently, the prize winners from each committee were revealed, with nine outstanding delegates earning the title of Best Delegate and High Commendations. Special mentions and verbal accolades were also distributed to commendable individuals.

Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, clinched the prestigious Best School Delegation Award. The conference proved to be a profoundly enriching experience for all participants, offering invaluable insights into contemporary politics and diplomacy.

It instilled a sense of responsibility in students, providing a platform for public discourse and decision-making. The event concluded with the official closure declaration by the Secretary-General, leaving a lasting impression on the educational landscape with its mission of fostering global peace and harmony.
