Her daughter has just completed her Class X Board exams and is now set to enter Class XI with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. She plans to pursue engineering studies. The family chose Apeejay School, Nerul, for their daughter, Jia, for its strong academic reputation. The proximity to their home was only a secondary factor. What mattered more was the quality of students the school has consistently produced over the years.
Dr Prathibha Shetty, who works with the Reliance Group of Companies, shared that the school’s reputation played a key role in their decision at the time of admission, along with several other factors, in a candid conversation.
How did you balance your professional life with Jia’s Class X Boards?
My daughter is a very bright student, so I did not feel much pressure. She managed most things on her own. The only areas where she needed a little extra attention were Math and Science. Since I come from a Biology background, I was able to support her there. Otherwise, she handled her studies independently.
Over the years, what changes have you noticed in her, and how has she matured?
The COVID-19 period was quite challenging because students lost two crucial years during Classes VI and VII. When she returned to school in Class VIII, she was a little slow initially. However, the school supported the students and helped them catch up. I saw a clear transition once she resumed offline learning.
The teachers were very understanding. They did not put pressure on the students, knowing they had lost important years. Instead, they gradually helped them regain their academic rhythm.
What are your daughter’s interests in extracurricular activities?
She is interested in cultural activities, especially dance. She is a trained Kathak dancer and actively participates in competitions and Annual Appreciation Day performances. The school has given her multiple opportunities to perform, which has helped her grow and refine her skills.
We have also supported her participation, as these platforms allow students to express themselves beyond academics. She is interested in literature as well and has won an essay competition. She enjoys writing on social topics.
How responsive and approachable are the teachers?
The teachers are very supportive and attentive. My daughter is quite shy and does not open up easily, even when she knows the answers. During parent-teacher meetings, the teachers pointed this out and encouraged us to help her become more expressive.
Following this, we encouraged her at home to participate more actively in class discussions. Over time, she began to open up.
Has she become more confident over the years?
Yes, definitely. I have seen a gradual but clear change in her. She has become much more confident, and I truly credit the teachers and the school for supporting this transformation.
