For some families, a school is not just a place of learning, it becomes a shared memory, a legacy passed down generations. For Mr Gurneet Singh Sarna, an alumnus of Apeejay School, Model Town, this bond comes full circle as both his sons, Ruhin Sarna (Class 6-B) and Pehlaj Sarna (Class 12-A, Non-Medical), walk the same corridors he once did. In this heartfelt edition of TalesOfTradition, Mr Sarna reflects on trust, tradition, and the quiet confidence that comes from returning to one’s roots.

Read edited excerpts:

What made you choose Apeejay School, Model Town again for your children?

The decision was instinctive. I studied at Apeejay School myself—starting at Model Town till Class 5 and then completing my Plus Two from the Mahavir Marg branch in 1997. My brother and sister also studied here, and all three of us are well-settled professionally today. That kind of foundation builds deep trust. Naturally, when it came to my children, Apeejay was the first choice.

How would you describe the role teachers played during your school years?

Teachers were the backbone of our journey. I still remember some of my educators. They didn’t just teach subjects; they shaped discipline, confidence, and values. That strong guidance is exactly what every parent looks for – even today.

What does it feel like returning to the same campus as a parent now?

It fills me with pride. Walking into the campus for PTMs or school functions brings back so many memories. This institution gave my family a bright future, and now watching my children grow here feels deeply fulfilling.

Are there teachers who connect your past with your children’s present?

Yes, absolutely. One of the finest Physical Education teachers there, taught me and now teaches my son as well. There were other teachers too, who taught my son and reminded me of my own school days. My son often says, “Papa, aap bhi yahin se padhe ho?”—and that shared connection makes the experience even more special.

How has Apeejay School contributed to your confidence beyond academics?

Apeejay gave me more than education, it gave me confidence. I pursued my Master’s in the UK, and coming from a CBSE background, I never felt lacking. Today, I work as a Chief Engineer in the merchant navy and also run my own immigration setup in Jalandhar. I truly credit Apeejay School for shaping that foundation.

How would you sum up your family’s journey with Apeejay School?

It’s been a journey of decades, mine, my siblings’, and now our children’s. From nursery to senior secondary, across generations, Apeejay School has remained a constant. We feel grateful and proud to be part of an institution that continues to nurture bright futures.
