Recently, students of Classes VIII-A and VIII-B at Apeejay School, Saket, participated in an engaging and insightful newspaper-based learning activity that deepened their understanding of India’s democratic processes. The session focused on the recent assembly elections of Assam, Puducherry, and Kerala, enabling students to connect classroom learning with real-world developments.
Designed to foster awareness and critical thinking, the activity encouraged students to analyse news reports, interpret electoral data, and discuss key aspects of the election process. Through guided discussions and collaborative learning, students explored the political landscape of the three states, gaining valuable insights into how democratic systems function in a diverse and dynamic nation like India. The initiative highlighted the importance of staying informed and cultivating an informed citizenry from a young age.
A key highlight of the session was the introduction to “Nila,” the Election Assistant, an innovative technological tool developed to enhance voter awareness and streamline electoral processes. Students were fascinated to learn how technology is transforming elections by making information more accessible and transparent. This segment sparked curiosity and meaningful conversations about the integration of digital advancements into governance and civic engagement.

Another significant aspect of the activity was the discussion on voter turnout and its crucial role in strengthening democracy. Students examined statistics from the recent elections and reflected on the importance of active citizen participation in shaping the nation’s future. They recognized that every vote carries the power to influence governance and uphold democratic values.
The newspaper-based approach proved to be both interactive and educational, promoting analytical thinking, awareness, and responsible citizenship. By engaging with current affairs, students developed a broader perspective on national issues while enhancing their comprehension and interpretative skills.
Such initiatives underscore Apeejay School, Saket’s commitment to holistic education that goes beyond textbooks. By nurturing informed, aware, and socially responsible individuals, the school continues to empower students to become thoughtful contributors to society and active participants in the democratic fabric of the nation.
