Cyber Smart, Cyber Safe: Apeejay Stya University, Gurugram Hosts Seminar on Digital Safety in the AI Era

Apeejay Stya University, (ASU), Gurugram, a NAAC ‘A’ Grade University, organised an insightful seminar titled “Cyber Awareness, Digital Safety and Ethics in the AI Era” . Conducted by the School of Engineering and Technology (SOET) and the School of Legal Studies (SOLS), the seminar sought to equip students with greater awareness of the opportunities, risks and responsibilities associated with an increasingly digital world.
The programme was graced by Sh. Manoj Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Delhi Police, as the Chief Guest. Mr. Sukhpal, SHO, Sohna Sadar, along with his team, also addressed the participants and shared valuable insights drawn from their experience of dealing with cyber-related incidents.

The speakers covered several critical dimensions of digital safety, including cybersecurity, online safety, cybercrime and responsible technology use. Students were sensitised to common cyber threats that can affect individuals in their everyday digital interactions. These included online fraud, phishing, identity theft, cyberbullying and the misuse of personal information.

The session also highlighted simple yet essential precautions that can significantly strengthen online security. Students were encouraged to create and maintain strong passwords, protect their personal information and remain cautious while using social media and other digital platforms. The discussions emphasised that digital safety is not limited to technical measures but also depends on informed decisions and responsible online behaviour.

With Artificial Intelligence becoming increasingly integrated into education, communication and professional environments, ethical AI use formed an important component of the seminar. Special attention was given to concerns surrounding privacy, misinformation, data protection and accountability. Students were encouraged to consider not only what AI technology can do, but also how it should be used responsibly and ethically.

The interaction with the police officials added a practical dimension to the programme. Students gained insights into cybercrime prevention and reporting mechanisms, helping them understand how to respond appropriately when confronted with suspicious digital activity or cyber-related offences. The session also encouraged participants to be more vigilant about protecting themselves and others in the digital environment.

The seminar was organised under the guidance of Dr. Teena, Head, SOLS, and Dr. Hemant, Head, SOET. It was coordinated by Mr. Adnan Irshad, Assistant Professor, SOLS, and Dr. Ritika, Assistant Professor, SOET. Approximately 70 students and faculty members attended the programme and actively engaged with the discussions. The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar also shared their valuable insights with the participants, further enriching the learning experience.

The programme concluded with an interview of ACP Manoj Kumar by Radio Stya Vani, providing an additional platform to reflect on the issues discussed during the seminar.

Overall, the seminar served as a meaningful awareness initiative, encouraging students to navigate the digital world with greater vigilance and responsibility. By bringing together technological, legal and practical perspectives, the programme reinforced the importance of becoming aware, safe, responsible and ethical digital citizens in the AI era.
