‘Academics and discipline are what made me choose Apeejay’

Some parenting decisions reveal slowly, over report cards and school events and quiet moments of watching a child grow into herself. For Baishali Gupta, the decision to choose Apeejay School, Nerul for her daughter Oishi Kar has been exactly that kind of decision. 

We caught up with her to find out what convinced her in the first place, and whether nearly six years in, the school has held up to that early promise.

What made you consider this school for your child in the first place?

Academics and discipline were at the very top of my list. I wanted Oishi to grow up in an environment that would help her integrate well with all kinds of people. Apeejay School, Nerul, felt like the right fit for exactly that. I chose Apeejay deliberately because I wanted her to have a slightly more grounded, humble environment to grow up in. That balance mattered a great deal to me.

How important are the school’s academic approach and teaching methods in your decision?

Extremely important. It was really the foundation of my decision. And academically, Oishi has done well here. I’ve been impressed by how her teachers, especially through the primary years, approached teaching.

When I admitted her here, I expected strong academics paired with genuine discipline.  Honestly, that’s exactly what we are experiencing. Oishi has grown into a disciplined, well-rounded student, and a lot of that I credit directly to the environment here.

How important are factors such as extracurricular activities, sports, arts, or other opportunities in the school?

This is actually one of the areas where the school has genuinely delivered. Oishi gets a lot of chances to take part in extracurricular activities. I’m genuinely happy with how well the school balances that alongside academics. It never felt like just cramming for exams.

As a parent, I wasn’t looking for a school that only focused on marks. I wanted somewhere that school would shape Oishi as a person too. The balance between academic rigour and personal growth is exactly what drew me to Apeejay.

How is the school environment and the way teachers interact with students?

The teachers are attentive and genuinely engaged with the students. They helped my daughter take responsibility for things and take up new leadership roles. Oishi was a prefect and class captain. With this my daughter got first-hand experience of seeing how seriously the school takes discipline and student conduct. She used to monitor corridors to oversee students during breaks. Teachers are watchful during breaks and supervise students closely, which gives me real peace of mind as a working parent.

Has Apeejay School, Nerul, lived up to your expectations?

Oishi has done well academically, and has had ample opportunity to explore her interests outside the classroom. I have seen her grow into a confident, disciplined student — which was exactly what I was hoping for when I enrolled her. Taking on roles like prefect and class captain gave her real ownership and maturity.
