For Akshaj Chaudhary, a Class 10 student of Apeejay School, Faridabad, discipline and respect for everyone are the foundation of who he wants to be. He tries to learn from his past experiences and to become a little better every day. Recognised with the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values, he says the honour made him feel that the values he follows in daily life are being noticed.
In this conversation, Akshaj speaks about what the award means to him, the guidance of his parents and teachers and more.
How did you feel when you learnt you had received the award?
I felt really happy and proud. It was a very special moment for me, because it made me feel that the values I try to follow in my daily life are being recognised. I am grateful to my parents and teachers for guiding me. This award has also motivated me to keep improving myself.

What values or skills have you developed through this journey?
I have become more aware of how my actions affect other people. I have learnt the importance of honesty, discipline, empathy and taking responsibility for my mistakes. I have also understood that small things, like helping someone or treating everyone equally, matter a lot. I am still learning, but I try to become a little better through my everyday experiences.
What role have the school and teachers played in shaping your values?
My school and teachers have played a very important role. They have taught me that education is not only about marks and results but also about how we behave and treat others. Their guidance has helped me understand that values are not just something we talk about. They are something we should practise every day.
In your view, what is the most important human value everyone should possess?
I think discipline is one of the most important. It is not just about following rules or being punctual. It is also about being responsible for our actions and doing what is right, even when nobody is watching. Discipline helps us stay focused and respect others. With discipline, we can achieve our goals while also becoming better human beings.
Do you believe in learning something new every day? How do you do that?
Yes, we can learn something new every day, even from ordinary situations. Sometimes we learn from our teachers, sometimes from our friends and sometimes from our own mistakes. I try to listen to others, understand different opinions and think about what I could have done better in a situation.
Has this recognition added more responsibility on your shoulders?
Yes, it comes with responsibility. It reminds me that I should continue following the values for which I have been recognised. I don’t think receiving an award means that I am perfect, but it encourages me to keep working on myself. I would like to set a good example through my actions and encourage others to be kind, honest and respectful as well.
In a world driven by competition and individual success, why do human values still matter?
Competition is important because it motivates us to work hard and improve ourselves. But while trying to succeed, we should not forget how we treat other people. Winning or achieving something feels good, but it feels even better when we achieve it honestly and without putting others down. Human values help us remember this.
