In a world that often measures success in marks and medals, Avni Aggarwal, a Class 10 student of Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, has been recognised for something harder to quantify: Her Values. As an awardee of the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values, Avni has become an example of how purpose, empathy and continuous learning can shape a young person’s character.

In this conversation, she speaks about what the honour means to her, the people who shaped her, and the kind of person she hopes to become.

Tell us about yourself Avni.

I believe in leading a life driven by purpose, empathy and continuous learning. Along with academics, I have always been actively involved in co-curricular activities. These activities have nurtured human values in me and helped me grow not just as a student, but as a human being.

How did you feel when you learnt you had received the award?

I was truly overwhelmed. This award is not just an award for me, but a blessing of Late Dr. Stya Paul Ji. He has always inspired me through his resilience and values. To be recognised in his name is a matter of immense honour for me and my family. It was a very emotional moment.

What values or skills have you developed through this journey?

This journey has taught me that true success lies in compassion, resilience and empathy. It has taught me to listen and understand others, to stay grounded and persevere, and to stay committed to the right path even when it is difficult.

What role did the institution and faculty play in shaping your values?

Apeejay does not just impart education, it builds character. My teachers have always led by example. They have encouraged us to be ethical, socially responsible and courageous.

In your view, what is the most important human value everyone should possess?

The world is full of ups and downs. In life, we cannot expect everything to be perfect, and we all face hurdles and challenges. That is why the ability to bounce back is so important. I believe resilience is the most important value everyone should have.

Do you believe in learning something new every day? How do you put that into practice?

Absolutely. Every small thing is an achievement for me, whether it is reaching class on time or never skipping my meals. Every little thing teaches us something if we try to find meaning in it.

Has this recognition added more responsibility on your shoulders?

Definitely. This recognition has increased my sense of responsibility. I don’t think I am in a position to be a role model for anyone right now, because I am just a child still learning about life. But I can certainly keep trying to inspire others by starting a chain of kindness.

In a world driven by competition and individual success, why do human values still matter?

Without values in this fast-paced world, we may win the race but lose the essence of being human. Values build trust and a better society for everyone. I definitely want to excel in life and achieve everything I have dreamed of, but above all, I want to be a better human being.
