He is seven years old and in Class II at Apeejay School, Kharghar. His claim to fame? He is a Black Belt. Besides karate, he loves music, drawing, reading and playing with his friends. Earning a Black Belt was a high point! “I was excited because I had worked very hard for it. It taught me that I can achieve my goals if I practise regularly and never give up,” Shriyam Shukla said in a candid interview, who started learning karate when he was three and a half years old.
What do you enjoy most about karate?
I enjoy learning new kicks, punches, blocks and other karate techniques. I also love practising katas. The best part is that karate teaches me discipline and helps me become stronger and more confident.
How did you prepare for the black belt test?
I practised regularly and listened carefully to my sensei. I worked on my techniques, katas, fitness and discipline. My elder brother had already earned his black belt, so he helped me a lot. I was determined to work hard and earn mine too.
Who encouraged you during your journey?
My parents, my brother and my sensei encouraged me throughout my journey. They always asked me to keep practising, stay focused and never give up.

What was the most difficult part?
The most difficult part was staying focused and practising even when I felt tired. Learning and remembering the different variations of katas was also challenging. My brother guided me during the difficult practice sessions and helped me improve.
How does the school support your passion for karate?
My school encourages me to take part in activities beyond academics and supports my interest in karate. My class teacher and coordinator always motivate me to accept new challenges. They appreciate my efforts and celebrate my achievements with great enthusiasm and affection.
What would you like to achieve next?
This is only the beginning for me. I want to earn advanced levels (dan) of the black belt. I feel proud to be a sempai at this age. I enjoy helping and guiding other students. I want to continue practising, become a good leader and remain disciplined and confident.
