Being emotionally independent is an empowering state of being, allowing individuals to maintain a healthy balance between their own emotions and their interactions with others. And therefore, in today’s fast-paced life, it’s crucial for individuals to cultivate emotional independence. Penning down her thoughts on ‘How to overcome emotional dependency and cultivate self-love for a fulfilling life?’, MBA student with Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC) Switakshi explains in her recent article why it’s important to practice self-awareness. A simple girl with big dreams follows a mantra for living a happy life:  Accept more and expect nothing. You cannot hold people so stop holding them.” In this week’s scholar-journalist interview, the CA aspirant explains what inspired her to write on this topic and shares tips on how to practice self-love. Read edited excerpts:

Why did you decide to write on this topic?

It’s simple because nowadays people chase those things which are emotionally unavailable and this disturbs their own peace of mind. They keep on thinking about it and in the process forget to priortise themselves. Automatically, all this directly or indirectly distracts them from their own focus, primarily from acknowledging the beautiful things they already have and prioritising their own mental well-being . That is why I chose this topic.

How can someone recognise emotional dependency and overcome the same?

I think you can recognise emotional dependency when you rely on them for everything, your mood swings according to how others behave with you. You need validation for everything from that specific person. You feel hard being alone. So how to overcome this emotional dependency? As I already  mentioned in my article:  “Just be yourself”.

How much time did you take to write this article?

Just a week

Did you refer to any books before writing this article?

No, I didn’t. I wrote the article from my observation or I must say my experience that I have gone through till now. It is well said by our parents “Thokar lag lag kar hi chizein samajh aane lag jaaati hai” (one learns from falling over or from multiple situations/experiences)

What kind of topics inspire you to write?

Mostly, psychology facts.

What kind of books/novels do you read?

I am not into reading books much. But I love to talk with people and always want to know their stories or facts about them. Because I think nowadays everyone is depressed and the only reason for that is not having the space or someone to share their feelings. Everyone needs emotional support, not emotional dependency.
