BharatGen; a groundbreaking initiative to democratise GenAI

Published

on

India recently, launched BharatGen, a pioneering initiative aimed at making generative AI accessible to citizens in various Indian languages. Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh described the project as the world’s first state-funded multimodal large language model initiative, spearheaded by IIT Bombay under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS).

BharatGen is built on open-source foundational models, promoting a collaborative ecosystem where researchers and developers can innovate together. This approach aims to democratise AI access across India, particularly benefiting government, private, educational, and research institutions. The project is expected to conclude within two years.

A notable aspect of BharatGen is its emphasis on data-efficient learning, specifically for Indian languages that at present, have limited digital representation. The initiative will work closely with academic institutions to develop effective models requiring minimal data — a crucial need for languages often overlooked by global AI initiatives.

During the launch, four thematic hubs — (T-Hubs) for Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication, Quantum Sensing and Metrology, and Quantum Materials and Devices — were introduced under the National Quantum Mission (NQM) as well. These hubs, located in major Indian research institutes like IISc Bengaluru and IIT Madras, will foster collaboration and innovation in quantum technologies, positioning India as a leader in this critical field.
