NCERT, CBSE Introduce AI and Computational Thinking Curriculum from Classes III to XII

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) are set to introduce dedicated curricula in Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for school students from Classes III to VIII starting in the 2026-27 academic session. The AI curriculum for students in Classes IX to XII has also been finalised, marking a significant step towards strengthening technology-oriented learning in Indian schools.

The Ministry of Education said the initiative is aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises digital literacy, critical thinking and the development of skills required for a rapidly evolving technological landscape. The new curricula aim to familiarise students with computational concepts and AI from an early stage while encouraging responsible and ethical engagement with emerging technologies.

Building AI Understanding from an Early Age

The curriculum for younger learners will introduce age-appropriate concepts related to computational thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving. Students will gradually become familiar with fundamental AI concepts and learn how technology can be applied to address real-world challenges.

According to information shared by the government, the curriculum has been designed progressively, allowing students to strengthen foundational concepts before moving towards more complex topics in higher classes. This structured approach is intended to create continuity in learning and help students develop technological competencies over the course of their school education.

Advanced Learning in Senior Classes

The government has also confirmed the completion of the AI syllabus for Classes IX to XII. The curriculum is expected to build upon concepts introduced during the earlier years and provide students with exposure to more advanced areas of artificial intelligence.

The move is aimed at preparing learners for higher education as well as emerging career opportunities in technology-driven sectors. By introducing AI education across different stages of schooling, policymakers hope to create a stronger foundation for students entering an increasingly digital economy.

The initiative forms part of the broader effort to integrate technology into school education.
