Recently, the government launched the AI-based National Pest Surveillance System (NPSS) to support farmers in managing pest-related challenges by connecting them directly with agricultural scientists and experts through their phones. The initiative, spearheaded by Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at an event organised by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, aims to reduce farmers’ reliance on pesticide retailers and foster a more scientific approach to pest management.
The NPSS leverages advanced AI tools to analyse the latest data on pests, providing farmers and experts with real-time insights into pest control and management. This technological innovation is part of the Centre’s broader effort to bring cutting-edge advancements in agriculture directly to farmers, enhancing their productivity and yield.

The platform will allow farmers to take photographs of infested crops or pests and share them with scientists and experts via NPSS. This will enable accurate identification and control of pests, ensuring that the correct pesticides are used in the right quantity and at the appropriate time.
The NPSS, having undergone successful pilot trials, is expected to benefit around 14 crore farmers across the country. The Centre plans to collaborate with state governments to propagate the use of NPSS through various outreach programmes, ensuring that this technology reaches the fields where it is most needed.
