Farmers embrace AI for the digital revolution

While full-scale automation in India’s agricultural sector is still a distant goal, mechanisation has been adopted in select areas. However, farmers across the country have the opportunity to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimise their farming practices. The system uses predictive analytics by collecting critical data on soil quality, irrigation methods, and crop selection to provide farmers with precise recommendations for every stage of cultivation, from pre-plantation to harvest.

With many farmers already using platforms like WhatsApp, chatbots, such as the one recently introduced by Meta, could provide real-time, hyper-personalised advice to farmers in local languages like Marathi. As smartphone penetration in rural areas increases, access to AI-driven information and resources will expand exponentially, transforming how farmers manage their crops.

Despite the potential of AI, it must be emphasised that technology will not replace the need for agricultural experts. Human expertise will remain significant for last-mile distribution, and institutions like Krishi Vigyan Kendras will continue to play a vital role in ensuring technology and human intervention work in tandem for the benefit of the farmers.
