Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, Haryana, achieved a milestone by becoming the first hospital in India to utilise Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in the treatment of a 62-year-old patient with a blood clot in the lung and deep vein. The medical team at Medanta employed the Penumbra Flash 12 F Catheter, an AI-driven device, for endovascular procedures to successfully remove the clots.
Since July 2023, Medanta Hospital has effectively treated 25 cases of pulmonary embolism, a condition involving blood clots that obstruct blood flow to a lung artery. This ground-breaking AI technology not only minimises blood loss but also reduces complications such as anemia, ultimately expediting patient recovery.
Dr. Naresh Trehan, a cardiologist and Chairman of Medanta Hospital, highlighted the significance of this technology, stating that instead of opening the chest and arteries, you can extract blood clots. The AI aspect allows clot removal without excessive blood loss, eliminating the need for a major operation and reducing associated risks.
