She recently participated in the Delhi State Sub Junior, Cadet and Junior Karate Championship 2026, organised by the Karate Association of Delhi at Talkatora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi. The championship was conducted under the recognition of the Delhi Olympic Association (DOA) and affiliated with the Karate India Organisation (KIO), ensuring a high standard of competition.

Securing a Gold medal in the Female Kumite event in the 10 years, plus-40 kg category, the achievement reflects her dedication, discipline, and commitment to the sport. Apeejay School, Noida, takes pride in her accomplishment and encourages students to actively participate in such events to enhance their overall development.

Meet Ira Negi, a Class VI student, who, in a candid interview, shares her regimen for the championship, among other things.

How did you develop interest in karate?

I started karate in playschool; it was a sport that we did in school itself. I was not exactly interested, but I started. I saw my sister, and she was also doing sports on a regular basis. Then when I got my black belt in karate in 2023, I got that motivational boost and decided to continue it.

How did you feel when you won the Gold?

I was really very happy that I got a chance to go on the national podium in Dehradun, and it was a really proud moment for me and my family. My coach trained us very well, and we did regular training. When the competition was nearing, we trained for longer hours.

What do you enjoy the most about this sport?

It teaches us how to build good character. It not only trains us physically but also mentally and helps us focus. It also helps us build sportsmanship. At the same time, one thing you should not do is become overconfident and think you can go and hit people or bully others or feel that you are superior to others.

Was there any moment during the final match that was very challenging?

In the tournament, the timings are not always accurate, so even if a match is scheduled at a certain time, it can change. I tried my best, and I usually try to take the lead and wait it out if the match is getting too time-taking and stamina-consuming.

What would you like to say to other students who want to try karate or any other sport?

I would really encourage them because any sport helps you build sportsmanship. It gives both physical and mental training and helps you handle pressure.
