‘Apeejay School, Pitampura, has had a profound impact on my life’

An alumnus of the school has earned a prestigious two-year fellowship under renowned regenerative medicine pioneer Dr Anthony Atala

Meet Dhanvin Gupta, an alumnus of Apeejay School, Pitampura (batch of 2022), who is turning his passion for biotechnology and 3D printing into a remarkable journey in 3D bioprinting. At present, pursuing Biotechnology at Delhi Technological University, Dhanvin combined his long-standing interest in Biology with his school-time hobby of 3D printing to explore the emerging field of regenerative medicine. Determined to gain hands-on experience, he immersed himself in research, skill development, and academic writing. His dedication recently earned him a prestigious two-year fellowship opportunity under renowned regenerative medicine pioneer Dr Anthony Atala.

In a candid interview, he shares what inspired him toward 3D bioprinting and regenerative medicine, among other things.

How does it feel to be selected for the fellowship at Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine? 

I feel absolutely great! It feels like a dream come true. Ever since I discovered 3D bioprinting, I have been reading research papers authored by the very person I’ve been selected to work under. The entire experience feels quite surreal.

What inspired you specifically towards 3D bioprinting and regenerative medicine?

My interest began in Class VII when my father gifted me a 3D printer for a project involving skull models for maxillofacial surgical planning. That experience introduced me to 3D printing, and when combined with my fascination for biotechnology and the human body, discovering 3D bioprinting felt like the perfect blend of my interests.

Can you explain what the WFRIM is known for globally?

It is globally renowned for its pioneering work in tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and 3D bioprinting. The institute became the first in the world to successfully transplant lab-grown organs, including the urinary bladder, into humans. Led by Dr Atala, a globally recognised pioneer in the field, it continues to drive groundbreaking advancements in regenerative medicine.

How exciting is this opportunity for you personally and professionally? 

I am incredibly excited. After reading so many of his papers and conducting my research, I’m eager to apply that knowledge in such an advanced laboratory. I truly believe this is one of the best possible opportunities for my professional advancement in this field. While I don’t have all the specific program details yet, my role as a research scholar will involve participating in translational research within the fields of 3D bioprinting and regenerative medicine.

How did Apeejay School, Pitampura, help shape your academic interests and confidence?

The school has had a profound impact on my life. Looking back, especially with the perspective I have now, I really appreciate how well our teachers taught and treated us. There is a quote I remember from school, though I don’t recall exactly who said it, that stuck with me: ‘A literate person knows how to read and write, but an educated person knows what is right and wrong’. I feel that, along with my family, my school played a vital role in shaping me into an educated individual. 

What were some of the challenges you faced while pursuing opportunities in research?

One of the biggest challenges in biotechnology was the perception that the field offered limited career opportunities in India. When I chose it, many people felt it wasn’t “worth it” and often compared it unfavourably to computer science or IT. Since biotechnology was still developing rapidly a few years back, there was no clear roadmap or established path to follow, especially in emerging areas like 3D bioprinting. I had to actively seek opportunities, gain hands-on experience, and explore possibilities across India and abroad. Fortunately, my family always supported my choices as long as I gave my best effort.

Qualities needed to pursue research careers abroad.

A research career demands genuine passion and dedication, as the work can often be repetitive and demanding. Once you find your interest, aim high, keep applying for opportunities, and gain practical experience. Invest in your growth. I even travelled to Bangalore independently to attend a 3D bioprinting workshop at Next Big Innovation Labs.

What advice would you give to current Apeejayites?

My advice is to believe in yourself and focus on discovering your true interests instead of simply following the crowd. It’s normal to feel uncertain about the future, but there is always a way forward. Keep exploring, experimenting, and pursuing what genuinely excites you—that’s what will bring the greatest fulfillment.

One word that describes your journey so far?

“Destiny.” I believe in creating opportunities through hard work. Once I stopped being passive and gave my best effort, obstacles began to clear. If something still doesn’t work out, I accept it and move forward to the next opportunity.
