Meet Ananya Sonal Arya, an alumna of Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, who graduated in 2024. She is, at present, pursuing her undergraduate studies in Chemistry at Shiv Nadar University, Noida. With a keen interest in exploring scientific concepts and problem-solving, She is deeply passionate about learning and discovery. Beyond academics, Ananya enjoys playing squash, singing, and spending quality time with friends and family. She also has a growing interest in psychology and occasionally takes up internships to broaden her understanding of the field.

In a candid interview, she talks about her school fondly, among other things.

When did your interest in Chemistry first begin?

My interest in the subject began during my school years when I discovered how chemical principles explain everyday phenomena. Engaging in classroom discussions and hands-on laboratory experiments further deepened my curiosity and interest in the subject.

What motivated you to pursue Chemistry as a research?

I realised that it plays a crucial role in addressing real-world challenges, from healthcare to energy and materials. The prospect of contributing to discoveries and expanding scientific understanding inspired me to pursue research in this field.

What are some of your most cherished memories from school days?

Some of my most cherished memories revolve around time spent with friends during classes and participating in various school events. I was actively involved in dance and had the opportunity to perform multiple forms, including ballet, Manipuri, Punjabi, and western styles.  In high school, I also hosted events and spoke on stage alongside my peers. Academically, I was proud to earn scholar badges and certificates. These experiences, along with interactions with teachers and classmates, helped me build confidence, especially in public speaking. Overall, my school journey was truly special and remains very close to my heart.

What areas of Chemistry fascinate you the most?

I am particularly fascinated by areas that connect theory with real-world applications, like Physical Chemistry, Molecular Interactions, and Reaction Mechanisms. Understanding how molecules behave and interact at a fundamental level is both challenging and exciting.

What has been the most exciting discovery or learning moment in your research journey so far?

One of the most exciting moments in my research journey was synthesising tris (acetylacetonato) cobalt (III) from cobalt (II) carbonate and acetylacetone, using hydrogen peroxide as the oxidising agent. Observing the reaction progress and finally obtaining the characteristic green crystalline complex made concepts like coordination chemistry, oxidation states, and ligand bonding feel tangible. It was incredibly rewarding to see textbook knowledge come to life.

What challenges did you face while transitioning from school-level learning to university research?

The transition involved adapting to a more analytical and in-depth approach to learning. University-level Chemistry requires greater independence, critical thinking, and application of concepts. Conducting experiments and ensuring successful outcomes demands precision and patience, especially as reactions become more complex. However, overcoming these challenges is an essential part of the research process.

What advice would you give to students at Apeejay who wish to pursue research careers?

Stay curious and never hesitate to ask questions, even the simplest ones. Science is about exploration and understanding. Focus on building strong fundamentals and be open to learning from experiments, mistakes, and new ideas.

What are your future aspirations in the field of chemistry?

I aspire to continue in the field of chemical research, contributing to scientific advancement and addressing real-world challenges through innovative work and collaboration.

One lesson from Apeejay School that still guides you today

It is the importance of curiosity and perseverance. The encouragement from my teachers to think independently and explore ideas continues to guide me in my academic and research journey.
