“Mathematics is not just about numbers, equations, computations or algorithms. It is about understanding.” —Srinivasa Ramanujan
Mathematics as a subject helps one understand the world through numbers and equations. It also provides an effective way of building mental discipline. It encourages logical reasoning, critical thinking, creative thinking, abstract or spatial thinking, problem-solving ability and even effective communication skills.
The world cannot ignore the contribution of mathematicians. India, too, as a nation has produced several mathematical geniuses. But one name stands apart when it comes to mathematical ability: Srinivasa Ramanujan. It is for this reason, that our nation annually celebrates National Mathematics Day on December 22 to coincide with S. Ramanujan’s birth anniversary. It is observed to honour the mathematical assertions made by Ramanujan which are opening new arenas of mathematical research even now. The pathbreaking work done by him within a mere 32 years of lived experience remains an inspiration for future generations.
Thus, to pay homage to this great Mathematician on his birthday and to raise awareness about the importance of Mathematics in our daily lives, Apeejay Noida pre-primary and primary student students (classes Nursery- 5) virtually observed Ramanujan Day on December 22.
Students of classes Nursery-2 were shown a presentation while students of classes 3-5 were shown a video on the life and contributions of Ramanujan. The objective of the presentation and the video was to inform students about the importance of mathematics in their daily life and encourage them to develop problem-solving skills.
Principal, Mr. AK Sharma reiterated that this day is observed in remembrance of the great mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan. He also emphasised upon the importance of mathematics in all aspects of life. He further highlighted that maths helps one understand the world through an analytical lens of logic.
Primary Teacher in-charge, Mrs. Smriti Samuel also addressed the students and reiterated the importance of celebrating National Mathematics Day. She emphasised that mathematics encourages a student to cultivate one’s reasoning faculties and also at a higher stage provides one a sense of the functioning of nature.
“We are surrounded with Mathematics which cannot be ignored to understand and live life better. God must have created the entire universe with supreme knowledge of mathematics. Let’s learn Math and make teaching of maths more enjoyable.”
