Every year on 5 September, India comes alive with cheerful excitement to celebrate Teacher’s Day. Why this date, you ask? Well, it’s the birthday of the great philosopher and former President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. His love for education and his belief in the power of teachers to shape young minds led to dedicating this day to honour our teachers, guides or mentors.
But globally, this day is celebrated on October 5. It was established by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1994 to commemorate the signing of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO recommendation concerning the status of teachers. This recognised the contribution of teachers in cooperation with the International Labour Organization (ILO).
To let you know, other countries observe Teacher’s Day on different dates like October 5 also happens to be the official Teacher’s Day for Afghanistan. Teacher’s Day In Singapore is celebrated on the first Friday of September. In Singapore, Teacher’s Day is considered a national holiday. In the US, Teacher’s Day is celebrated on the first Tuesday of May.
Hence, let’s recognise the rich contribution of teachers across the world . Afterall, if carefully looked at, one realises that a teacher not only shapes the future of their immediate students, but also of future generations. A teacher is the healer of all humanity, the great nation-builder.
So what can we do in our little ways to honour our teachers for their rich contribution in our lives?

Spread smiles and appreciation
How can you show your teachers some love on this special day? Get creative, my friends! You can start by making heartfelt greeting cards or crafting personalized gifts. Want to add some more fun? Organise surprise games or quizzes, where you become the teacher for a change and see how your mentors tackle the questions.
Moulding the Future: teachers as nation builders
Why are teachers called the best nation makers? Imagine a world without them – no doctors, engineers, artists, or leaders! Teachers instill knowledge, values, and a thirst for learning in us, shaping us into responsible citizens who contribute to society. Just like a potter molds clay into beautiful pots, teachers mold us into the leaders and dreamers of tomorrow.

Inspirational journey through time
The world has witnessed incredible teachers who’ve changed the course of history. From Socrates, whose wisdom still echoes, to Anne Sullivan, who transformed Helen Keller’s life, teachers have left an indelible mark. In India, we have Dr. Radhakrishnan himself, along with Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, whose passion for science ignited minds across the nation. Seek inspiration from their stories and let their dedication and teachings drive your own ambitions.
Remember that it’s not just about gifts and celebrations; it’s about expressing gratitude for the countless lessons, both inside and outside the classroom.
Let this day be a reminder that your teachers are like guiding stars, lighting up your path to success. So, gather your enthusiasm, creativity, and appreciation, and make this Teacher’s Day a truly unforgettable one!
