Every generation is shaped by its youth, but today’s young people are doing far more than preparing for the future. They are creating it. Observed annually on August 12, International Youth Day celebrates the energy, innovation, and resilience of young people across the globe. Established by the United Nations in 1999, the day serves as a reminder that youth are not merely tomorrow’s leaders, they are active changemakers making a difference today.
The numbers speak for themselves. According to the United Nations, there are more than 1.2 billion people aged 15 to 24 worldwide, accounting for nearly 16% of the global population. By 2030, young people are expected to play an even greater role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from tackling climate change and promoting quality education to advancing innovation and building more inclusive societies.
Today’s youth are redefining leadership. They are launching start-ups from their bedrooms, using technology to solve community challenges, raising awareness through social media, volunteering for social causes, and excelling in fields ranging from science and sports to literature and the arts. Their curiosity, creativity, and courage are transforming ideas into action.
Yet, being young in today’s fast-changing world also comes with challenges. Mental well-being, digital safety, environmental concerns, and the rapidly evolving job market demand resilience and adaptability. This makes education more important than ever, not just as a means of academic success, but as a foundation for critical thinking, empathy, collaboration, and lifelong learning.
Schools play a pivotal role in nurturing these qualities. Such as Apeejay Education, they teach by encouraging inquiry, creativity, leadership, and service, educational institutions empower students to discover their strengths and contribute meaningfully to society. Every debate entered, every science project presented, every poem written, every community initiative undertaken, and every challenge overcome helps shape confident, compassionate individuals.
International Youth Day is therefore more than a date on the calendar. It is a celebration of dreams in motion and potential waiting to be realised. It reminds us that age is never a barrier to making an impact. History has repeatedly shown that some of the world’s most transformative ideas have come from young minds willing to question, imagine, and act.
