Software engineering is often viewed through the narrow lens of coding. Yet writing efficient programmes is only one part of the profession. The strongest software engineers combine technical ability with curiosity, discipline, clear thinking and the confidence to work with others. For students hoping to enter this fast-moving field, preparation must therefore begin well before they choose a degree or apply for their first job.
Ambika Sadhu, an alumna of Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad, who works with Amazon US as a Software Engineer, believes that students should build themselves as individuals rather than focus only on one career-specific skill.
“Software is a very broad field today. My advice to students, irrespective of the profession they choose, is to focus on their holistic growth. Academic excellence is not achieved overnight. Students must work consistently and learn from their mistakes. At the same time, co-curricular opportunities play an important role in shaping their personalities,” she said.
Those interested in software should begin by understanding the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence and exploring coding from an early age, she added.
“However, professional growth does not depend solely on technical knowledge. It also rests on the ability to communicate, contribute original ideas and demonstrate leadership. Amazon places considerable emphasis on leadership qualities. Such qualities are cultivated from a young age, making school the right place to develop them. Technical skills can be acquired at different stages of life, but communication and other essential personal qualities are best nurtured during the school years,” she shared.
Her perspective offers students a useful reminder: software engineering is ultimately as much about people as it is about technology. Engineers must explain ideas, understand problems, accept feedback and contribute meaningfully to a team. Coding languages and tools will continue to evolve, but the habits built through steady learning, participation, and self-reflection remain valuable.
