Are there any disadvantages of quitting your job on the first day? The answer is a clear ‘YES’. And when you start applying for your next job, you will always be asked this: ‘Why did you quit your job on day one?’

That’s why Assistant Professor Neha Gupta, who is also a Placement Manager at Apeejay School of Management (ASM), highlights a quote of an award-winning journalist: “Utilise caution and patience in decision-making because temporary wrong decisions can bring you a lifetime of hurt and pain.”

Prof. Gupta emphasises that even though it may take time to adjust to the new job, the solution shouldn’t be quitting it right away.  “Most of the time people are not very comfortable in the initial days of their jobs, especially when a fresher joins an organisation. But quitting the job on the very first day can be a very risky decision. A person needs to be a little patient and wait for things to get settled. Also, one should understand that every job or company comes with its own pros and cons,” she mentions.

Thus, there can be significant side-effects and implications for one’s professional journey. While it is understandable that certain circumstances may lead to such a decision, it is essential to recognise the potential consequences that may arise from this abrupt action.

Let’s look at some more disadvantages of this decision:

Reputation damage: Quitting a job on the first day can tarnish one’s professional reputation. Employers may view it as a lack of commitment, reliability, or inability to handle challenges. This negative perception can follow an individual throughout their career, making it harder to secure future job opportunities. As Prof Gupta stresses, “Quitting the job on the first day might get you and your institution blacklisted, not only from that particular company, but it might damage your reputation in that whole industry. Future employers might doubt your loyalty. It might aggravate your co-workers and your reporting manager, which may lead to spoiling your feedback on social media.”

Explaining gaps in the resume: A one-day job stint may leave a noticeable gap in a person’s employment history. When potential employers see this gap, they may inquire about it during interviews, and the explanation of quitting on the first day may be challenging to articulate convincingly. It can raise doubts about an individual’s commitment and reliability.

Limited professional growth: By leaving a job before even starting, individuals miss out on the chance to learn new skills, gain experience, and grow professionally. Every role provides an opportunity to develop and enhance capabilities, and quitting prematurely deprives individuals of these valuable learning experiences.

Financial implications: Depending on the employment contract and local labor laws, quitting a job on the first day may result in financial repercussions. Some organizations may impose penalties or deduct training costs from an individual’s salary. Moreover, the sudden loss of income can create financial strain, especially if one has not secured an alternative job.

Emotional impact: The placement expert explains how this situation eventually impacts the mental well-being of candidates. “Personally also, it may affect candidates a lot as they might get afraid of joining any other organisation. Also, quitting without a concrete plan leaves people more likely to suffer with a feeling of emotional distress. The negative feelings the brain can cycle through after quitting can be significant with guilt, fear and a sense of failure.” Quitting a job may also erode self-confidence and make it more challenging to bounce back and pursue future job opportunities with enthusiasm.

So, before you take a step, make sure why you are taking that decision. While there may be valid reasons for quitting a job on the first day, it is crucial to weigh the potential side-effects and consider alternative solutions.
