She can skilfully throw the discus and shot put, aiming to reach the stars with her natural talent. Meet Zoe Malhan, a Class VIII student from Apeejay School, Nerul. In a candid interview, she shares how her pride swells up each time she counts the medals to her name adorning the wall.

Tell us about your recent athletic achievement.

My most recent achievement in athletics has been bagging the 3rd position in discus throw and 4th position in shot put throw in the CBSE Cluster IX Athletic Meet, which was held in Kolhapur recently.

How did you pick up interest in this sport?

My father, an alumnus of the school, was an active sportsperson who participated in many games, including shot put. That’s how I first learnt about athletics. Later, at the end of Class V, my sports coach encouraged me to take part in athletics. Though hesitant at first, since I was already on the football, throwball, basketball, table tennis, and lawn tennis teams, I eventually found a balance and grew excited about the opportunity.

Who is your inspiration, and why?

My parents are truly my greatest inspiration. They have always been there encouraging me to take a break from studies and to go down for a run or play with friends. My mother was a Kabaddi team captain in her school and has also taught me how to balance academics with sports.

How did Apeejay School support your journey in athletics?

The school has played a vital role in my athletic journey. My coaches have worked tirelessly to train me, instil discipline, and teach me the true spirit of sportsmanship. They constantly encouraged me to push my boundaries and realise my potential. The school has provided a safe, supportive space to explore different sports and grow stronger in them.

Share your training regime.

I train on the school grounds six days a week throughout the year. About a month before competitions, I also began gym sessions with a personal trainer to focus on strength training. To stay sharp and in shape, I follow a strict diet and daily exercise routine. My schedule includes morning practice at school before classes, additional sessions after school and self-study, and evening workouts at the gym for about an hour and a half.

How has sport honed your personality?

Sports have greatly shaped my personality, making me more disciplined and instilling important values along with the true spirit of sportsmanship. They have helped me grow into an all-rounder. This year, as the Vikramshila House Middle Prefect, balancing leadership, training, and academics has been challenging, but it taught me how to manage everything. Sports have also been a stress reliever, keeping me focused and positive.

What are the challenges you face during competition, and how do you overcome that?

The competition coincided with my PT-1 exams, and I had to miss two papers, which I later attempted. Managing the stress of both academics and the upcoming event was tough. Missing several practice sessions due to exams also made me doubt my performance. Last year, at the CBSE Cluster Meet, I placed 9th, which gave me a clear idea of the competition’s level. This time, I trained harder, focused on overcoming self-doubt, and worked on building strength through gym workouts to improve my throws and perform with confidence.
