He is, at present, pursuing the medical stream with Psychology at Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad. His fascination with psychiatry is what made him choose this combination. But his choice is not what makes him stand tall among his peers. He has recently qualified for boxing (national level). Meet Chakshan Tanwar, a Class XI student, who, aside from boxing, enjoys cycling and playing football.
In a candid interview, he shares his journey, among other things.
How did you become interested in boxing?
I began with karate and later took up kickboxing. Since punches are prominent in kickboxing, I gradually developed a serious interest in boxing. I have been practising karate for seven years and kickboxing for three years. I began focusing specifically on boxing around seven months ago.
Tell us about your journey in karate, kickboxing, and boxing.
My journey began with karate, and I went on to compete at the district, state, and national levels. I later moved into kickboxing and then started training specifically in boxing. Each sport has helped me develop different skills and become a more complete athlete.
How do you prepare for competitions at the national level?
National competitions are far more difficult than district and state events because participants come from across the country. I follow a nutritious diet and train regularly and intensely. I also track my progress, remain disciplined, and continue believing in myself.

Which do you prefer, karate or kickboxing, and why?
I prefer kickboxing because it is more versatile. It allows me to use both kicks and punches. It also includes elements of grappling and wrestling, which help develop a more complete athlete.
What challenges do you face while competing at the district, state, and national levels?
One of the main challenges is missing classes because of training and competitions. Injuries are another concern because recovery can take a long time. I suffered a back injury in January this year and could not participate in sports for three to four months.
How do you balance sports and academics?
I make a conscious effort to keep both on track. At times, sport demands more of my attention, so I manage my schedule carefully and set aside enough time for my studies. I do not want to fall behind academically.
How does your school and your parents support you?
My teachers help me cover the classes and concepts I miss. I can clear my doubts during enrichment sessions. If necessary, I can also stay at school from 2 pm to 3 pm to learn a topic or concept that I missed.
My parents have always been there for me, especially during difficult periods and injuries. They provide me with the right sporting gear and take care of my nutrition, health, and overall well-being.
What have karate and kickboxing taught you?
These sports have taught me to remain calm amid chaos. For me, strength is not about proving myself to others. It is about developing discipline and remaining resilient during the low points of my journey. Staying fit has improved my focus and concentration. It helps me maintain a healthy body and an alert mind, allowing me to study for longer periods.
