Apeejay schools practise experiential learning or “learning by doing” to help students understand concepts practically instead of cramming theories. In line with this vision, three students from Apeejay School, Kharghar, made their school proud by creating an innovative digital weather station that combined their knowledge of Robotics and Geography.

Harshit Patil and Rehal Rahaz from class VII D and Nalin Aggarwal from class VIII A worked on the project under the aegis of Dr Amita Tiwari, TGT Geography teacher, Apeejay Kharghar. “I was looking for a project through which my students could demonstrate their creative as well as technical skills. That is when I came up with the idea of building a digital weather station,” Dr Tiwari said.

The next step was to look for students who would be appropriate for the task. “I wanted students who had a good understanding of robotics and coding. Soon, we began working on it. Later on, my students came up with a fully developed model. We perfected it and showed it to the principal and teacher coordinator, who checked the device practically to see if it displayed the correct results,” added the class teacher of class VII D.

The device measures temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, light, and location. To operate it, one has to connect it to Wi-fi. Most importantly, the device runs on solar energy. “The students have also developed a QR code for accessing the device,” said the proud teacher.

Dr Tiwari is now looking forward to showcasing the weather station in a science exhibition. Such activities not only benefit students in gaining conceptual clarity but also develop their interest in learning. “It was a really motivating exercise for the children. It inspired other students as well and they were very excited to see the final product. At Apeejay, we make sure to work on many such projects from time to time,” she said.
