Chess, as it is rightly termed, is a game of patience, skill and far-sightedness. Here is an example that reflects these characteristics at such a young age. Satvik Gupta, a class IV student of Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, Jalandhar, is already a prize-winner in well-known competitions and was the runner-up at the 4th AB Chess Club Open Tournament. He shares the tale of his venture into chess, his thoughts on tournaments, heroes, studies and his dreams.

What inspired you to start playing chess at such a young age, and how has your journey evolved over time?

I started playing chess when I was very young after watching my family members play the game. I found it interesting because every move requires thinking and planning. Over time, with regular practice and participation in tournaments, my understanding of the game has improved, and my confidence has grown.

How did you prepare for the 4th AB Chess Club Open Tournament, where you secured 2nd Position in the Under-9 category?

I prepared by practising chess daily, solving puzzles, and playing practice games with my coach and friends. I also revised different openings and learned from my previous mistakes. Consistent practice helped me perform well in the tournament.

Securing a position in the Punjab State Chess Championship is a remarkable achievement. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the tournament?

The biggest challenge was facing strong and experienced opponents. Every game required full concentration and patience. Sometimes the matches were long and mentally demanding, but I stayed focused and tried my best in every round.

Which chess player or mentor do you look up to, and how have they influenced your playing style?

I admire Gukesh because of his calm nature, discipline, and excellent chess skills. His achievements inspire me to work hard and keep improving. I also learn a lot from my coach, who guides me and helps me understand the game better.

How do you balance academics and chess practice while studying in Class IV?

I follow a proper schedule and complete my schoolwork on time. After studying, I dedicate time to chess practice. My parents and teachers help me maintain a balance between academics and chess.

What role has Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, played in encouraging and supporting your interest and achievements in chess?

My school has always encouraged me to participate in competitions and pursue my interests. The teachers motivate me, appreciate my achievements, and support me whenever I represent the school in tournaments. Their encouragement gives me the confidence to perform better.

Among all the matches played in these tournaments, is there any particular game or moment that you remember as especially memorable or exciting?

One of my most memorable moments was winning a difficult match after carefully planning my moves and staying calm under pressure. It was exciting because the game could have gone either way, and the victory taught me the importance of patience and focus.

Finally, after these wonderful achievements, what motivates you to continue working hard, and what can we look forward to from you in the future?

My love for chess and the desire to improve motivate me to keep working hard. Every tournament teaches me something new and encourages me to do better. In the future, I hope to win more championships, represent my state and country, and continue making my school and family proud.
