‘I am turning classroom learning into real-world design’
This student says that AID has taught her the importance of problem-solving, creativity, and attention to detail
From space planning and material selection to execution, this interior design student is gaining hands-on experience by managing a complete 3BHK residential project at ATS Greens Paradiso, Greater Noida, through her professional practice, Studio 83 Interiors. Meet Kaleesha Massey, a GDP Interior Design student from the 2024-2027 batch at Apeejay Institute of Design (AID), New Delhi.
In a candid interview, she talks about how the skills learnt at AID are helping her, among other things.
Tell us about your design studio – Studio 83 Interiors. Why this name?
Studio 83 Interiors is my independent interior design practice, born out of a lifelong passion for transforming spaces into meaningful experiences. I launched the firm while pursuing my Interior Design degree at the Apeejay Institute of Design, blending academic learning with real-world execution.
The number 83 is uniquely special in my life, carrying a meaning and a feeling that stays close to my heart. Just like the number, every design I create holds a distinct place in my heart, crafted with individual care, emotion, and purpose. My goal is to design spaces that aren’t just elegant and practical, but deeply resonant and personal to the people who live in them.
What inspired you to study Interior Design at Apeejay Institute of Design?
I’ve always been fascinated by how thoughtfully designed spaces can influence people’s daily lives and emotions. That passion led me to choose Interior Design at Apeejay Institute of Design. The institute offered the right balance of creativity and technical knowledge, helping me understand not only aesthetics but also space planning, materials, construction details, and client communication.
How has the course helped you work on this 3BHK project?
The course has played a major role in preparing me for this project. It taught me how to approach a design professionally, from understanding the client’s requirements and developing concepts to preparing layouts, selecting materials, and coordinating execution. The technical knowledge I gained through studio projects has helped me confidently handle this real residential project.
What did you focus on while planning the apartment layout?
My primary focus was creating a layout that balanced functionality, comfort, and aesthetics. I carefully planned circulation, optimized storage, maximized natural light, and ensured that every room reflected the client’s lifestyle while maintaining a cohesive design throughout the apartment.
How did you balance the client’s needs with your design ideas?
I believe successful design comes from collaboration. I first listened carefully to the client’s expectations, lifestyle, and budget, and then combined those requirements with my design ideas. Every decision was discussed with the client so the final design felt both practical and uniquely suited to them.
What challenges did you face during material selection and execution?
One of the biggest challenges was selecting materials that met the client’s expectations while staying within budget and ensuring durability. I also had to coordinate with vendors and contractors, deal with material availability, and make practical decisions without compromising the overall design vision.
How does it feel to manage a project while still studying?
It has been both exciting and challenging. Managing a real 3BHK project while studying has helped me apply everything I’ve learned in the classroom to a real-life situation. It has taught me how to balance academics with professional responsibilities, communicate with clients and vendors, and make confident decisions on-site. The experience has made me more responsible and has strengthened my confidence as a young designer.
What skills learnt at AID that are helping you?
The skills I’ve learnt have been extremely valuable throughout this project. Space planning, design development, material selection, technical drawings, 3D visualisation, and understanding construction details have all helped me execute the project effectively. AID has also taught me the importance of problem-solving, creativity, attention to detail, and presenting ideas professionally to clients.
What are your plans for Studio 83 Interiors?
My goal is to grow Studio 83 Interiors into a design firm known for creating thoughtful, functional, and elegant spaces. I want to work on a wider range of residential and commercial projects, continue learning from every experience, and build a strong portfolio. As I gain more experience, I hope Studio 83 Interiors becomes a trusted name that reflects quality, creativity, and client satisfaction.
