Earthquake drill builds safety awareness
Students and staff at Apeejay School, Rama Mandi, Jalandhar, practise emergency response protocols through a comprehensive mock drill
Recently, Apeejay School, Rama Mandi, Jalandhar, conducted a comprehensive earthquake drill to reinforce emergency preparedness and equip students and staff with essential life-saving skills. The exercise aimed to create awareness about earthquake safety protocols while encouraging a calm, coordinated, and responsible response during emergencies.
The drill began with students receiving instructions on the standard earthquake safety procedure: Drop, Cover, and Hold. They were guided to immediately bend down, protect their heads using their hands or school bags, and take shelter beneath their desks. Students were also instructed to firmly hold onto the desk with one hand and remain in position until the simulated tremors had ceased.
Once the all-clear signal was given, they evacuated their classrooms in an orderly manner and assembled safely at the designated assembly point. Throughout the exercise, students demonstrated discipline and composure, reflecting their understanding of the importance of remaining calm during emergencies.
To further strengthen awareness, a video presentation was screened for both students and staff, explaining the correct evacuation procedures and safety measures to be followed before, during, and after an earthquake. The visual demonstration helped participants gain a clearer understanding of emergency response practices and reinforced the significance of preparedness.
The evacuation plan and the successful execution of the drill were carried out under the guidance of Vice Principal Ms. Loveleen Bagga, with active support from the school’s Youth Club. Student volunteers from the club efficiently coordinated the movement of participants, ensuring the drill was conducted smoothly and safely across all classes.
The school Principal, Mr Sharma, underscored the importance of conducting regular safety drills, stating that preparedness is the key to minimising risks and protecting lives during unforeseen situations. He encouraged students and staff to treat such exercises seriously, as they build confidence, promote quick decision-making, and enable individuals to respond effectively during real emergencies.
The well-organised drill served as a valuable learning experience, reaffirming the school’s commitment to fostering a safe, aware, and disaster-ready learning environment for every member of its community.
