NEET UG to be revamped like the two-stage JEE model, Centre tells SC

The Central Government has informed the Supreme Court that it is actively examining significant reforms to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET-UG), including the possibility of introducing a two-stage examination pattern similar to the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The proposal also includes exploring the feasibility of conducting the examination in a computer-based format.

The submission was made through an affidavit filed before the apex court, which is currently hearing a series of petitions seeking reforms in the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA). The petitions were filed following concerns over alleged question paper leaks and other irregularities that have raised questions about the transparency and security of the examination process.

According to the Centre, these proposed changes are part of broader efforts to strengthen the integrity, reliability, and efficiency of one of India’s largest and most competitive entrance examinations. If implemented, the reforms could mark one of the most significant changes in the history of NEET-UG, affecting millions of medical aspirants across the country.

A two-stage examination model, similar to the JEE Main and JEE Advanced system, could help streamline the admission process while enhancing the overall evaluation mechanism. In addition, shifting to a computer-based test is expected to improve security measures, minimise the risk of malpractice, and ensure a more standardised testing experience.

The Supreme Court is examining the petitions in light of recent controversies surrounding the conduct of entrance examinations and the need for stronger safeguards to protect their credibility. The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing again on August 6, when the court is expected to review the Centre’s submissions and consider the proposed roadmap for reforms.

The outcome of the proceedings could have far-reaching implications for the future structure of NEET-UG and the country’s medical admission process.
