Google brings Gemini AI to Google Pay in India

Google has announced the integration of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistant, Gemini, into Google Pay in India, marking a significant step towards making digital payments smarter and more personalised. The new feature, called Ask Google Pay, will allow users to interact with the app in a conversational format to better understand and manage their finances.

Powered by Gemini, the AI assistant analyses a user’s transaction history and, where applicable, credit report data to deliver personalised insights into spending habits. Users can ask questions about their expenses, receive practical savings suggestions, discover tailored offers, and gain a clearer understanding of their financial behaviour.

Beyond spending analysis, Ask Google Pay also serves as an educational tool. It can simplify complex financial concepts by explaining topics such as systematic investment plans (SIPs), credit scores, compounding interest, and the differences between various tax regimes. The feature will support conversations in ten Indian languages, making financial guidance more accessible to a wider audience across the country.

In a separate announcement, Google revealed that it is expanding its Flex by Google Pay buy now, pay later offering through a partnership with the State Bank of India (SBI). The collaboration will introduce a co-branded credit card that will be available on both the RuPay and Visa payment networks.

The new Flex card will come with several exclusive benefits. Customers will be eligible for a 50 per cent discount on the Google AI Plus subscription for one year, with plans offering 400 GB and 2 TB of cloud storage. Cardholders will also receive discounts across Google’s Pixel smartphone lineup.

The announcements reflect Google’s broader strategy to strengthen its financial services ecosystem in India by combining AI-powered financial assistance with expanded payment and credit solutions.
