Government launches Saksham Scholarship Scheme to support differently-abled students

In a significant effort to promote inclusive education, the central government has introduced the Saksham Scholarship Scheme, designed to assist differently-abled students in pursuing higher education. Managed by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the program aims to remove financial obstacles that often hinder students with special needs from accessing quality educational opportunities.

The Saksham Scholarship for Specially Abled Students offers an annual stipend of Rs 50,000 to eligible candidates enrolled in AICTE-accredited institutions. This financial support is intended to cover essential expenses such as college tuition fees and the cost of educational materials. By alleviating these financial burdens, the scheme enables students to focus on their studies without the stress of economic constraints.

Eligibility for the scholarship is specifically targeted at students with a disability level of 40% or more, ensuring that those facing significant challenges receive the necessary support. Additionally, applicants must come from families with an annual income not exceeding Rs 8,00,000, prioritising assistance to those who are most in need.

The duration of the scholarship is aligned with the typical length of higher education programs. Students pursuing degree courses can receive support for up to four years, while those enrolled in diploma programs are eligible for up to three years of assistance. This ensures continuous financial aid throughout the critical phases of their academic journeys.

To streamline the application process, the Saksham Scholarship Scheme is accessible through the National Scholarship Portal. This centralised platform simplifies the procedure, making it more convenient for eligible students to apply and take advantage of the opportunity.
