The Interior Design Department of Apeejay Institute of Design (AID) recently organised an engaging End Semester Display Program, offering students a unique platform to transform classroom concepts into immersive, life-size spatial experiences. Rooted in the idea that design is not merely the creation of spaces and objects but the translation of culture, identity, and human experiences into meaningful environments, the initiative encouraged students to apply theoretical learning through practical execution.

As part of the live-display exercise, students divided into two creative teams, each tasked with conceptualising and developing a hypothetical
full-scale display installation based on distinct themes. The activity aimed to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical design application by encouraging students to engage in experiential and collaborative design processes.

One student team explored the vibrant and culturally rich heritage of Odisha, translating its traditional crafts, folk narratives, indigenous identity, colours, textures, and architectural influences into a contemporary spatial setting. Through thoughtful design interpretation, the installation reflected how regional culture can be integrated into modern interior environments while preserving authenticity and emotional depth. The display showcased an artistic blend of tradition and innovation, offering viewers a sensory experience rooted in Odisha’s cultural essence.

The second team worked on conceptualising a premium experiential display inspired by the design philosophy of renowned luxury brand Sabyasachi. The installation focused on themes of luxury retail, visual merchandising, handcrafted detailing, material styling, ambient lighting, and storytelling through interiors. Students carefully curated a space that reflected elegance and sophistication while demonstrating how thoughtful interior design contributes to memorable consumer experiences and emotional engagement in premium retail settings.

The live-display initiative provided students with an opportunity to move beyond textbook learning and actively engage with the realities of design execution. From brainstorming concepts to coordinating installations, the programme emphasised teamwork, communication, planning, and creative problem-solving.

Students also gained valuable exposure to practical aspects such as spatial composition, detailing, material experimentation, and on-site execution. The collaborative format encouraged peer learning and strengthened their ability to translate abstract ideas into tangible design outcomes.

The exercise proved to be a meaningful academic experience, helping students understand experiential and thematic display design while enhancing their knowledge of visual merchandising and retail aesthetics. It also strengthened their skills in project coordination, presentation, and connecting theoretical concepts with practical implementation.

By encouraging creativity, cultural interpretation, and hands-on learning, the End Semester Display Program successfully provided students with an enriching opportunity to experience the evolving dimensions of interior design in real-world contexts.
