Experts lead a comprehensive discussion on the future of pharmacovigilance in India

The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPS) at Apeejay Stya University (ASU) in Gurugram recently concluded the week-long event on “Skill Development Program in Pharmacovigilance (PV)”. This event was organised  in association with knowledge partners Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Delhi State Branch (DSB), Walter Bushnell Pvt Ltd. and Martin and Harris Labs Ltd. The event was a resounding success, bringing together professionals, experts, and enthusiasts from the field of pharmacovigilance to discuss on the theme: ‘Boosting Public Confidence in Pharmacovigilance’.

The Keynote Session 

The first day witnessed an impressive lineup of speakers who set the tone for the week-long event. Dr. Vivek Ahuja, Senior Vice President, Pharmacovigilance, Quality & Regulatory at EVERSANA delivered the keynote session during which he highlighted on ‘Safeguarding tomorrow’s health: A dialogue on the future of patient safety with leaders of tomorrow’. He explained how AI holds immense potential in future patient safety, with its ability to analyse vast healthcare data swiftly and accurately. Further, Ms Sugandha Sharma, Pharmacovigilance Associate, Pharmacovigilance Program of India, (PvPI), Indian Pharmaceutical Commission (IPC), addressed the audience on ‘Pharmacovigilance & ADR Reporting’, following which Ms. Bhawna Gupta, Director Regulatory Affairs, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd, New Delhi spoke on ‘Career Perspective in Regulatory & Pharmacovigilance’.

Discussion on Evolving Landscape of Intellectual Rights

The second day continued to provide valuable insights, with Mr. S. Sudipta Dey, Former Dy. Drugs Controller (India) CDSCO & Former Technical Adviser IPC, discussing the global perspective on quality management and the need for international collaboration via online mode. Dr. Narender Yadav, Patent Agent & Assistant Professor at Apeejay Stya University highlighted the audience on the basics of Intellectual Property Rights and its importance in pharmacy. Their presentations added depth to the discussions surrounding the evolving landscape of intellectual rights. 

The Relevance & Applicability of Pharmacovigilance Practices

On the third day of the event, Mr. Vivek Padgaunker, Former Director OPPI ( Project & Policy), Former GSK (Sales,Marketing & Training) led the discussion on public confidence, patient centricity, reporting and monitoring of ADR. Following which, Mr. Neeraj Kumar, Assistant Manager, APCER provided practical guidance on ‘Overview of Medical Information’. He also highlighted the ADR reporting process, and career opportunities in medical communication. Their presentations were well-received by the audience and further emphasised the relevance and applicability of pharmacovigilance practices.

The Final Day

The final day of the week-long witnessed sessions by two outstanding speakers who delved into the realm of skill development in pharmacovigilance and IPR. Mrs. Pooja Kumar, Registered Patent Agent (Govt of India), Founder, Director, Innove Intellects LLP, shared her insights on the process of filing patents for pharmaceutical products while encouraging the budding pharmacists to come forward for filing patents. Mr. Kiran Das, Director – International Business, Pulse Pharmaceutics, concluded the event with a comprehensive discussion on the future prospects of pharmacovigilance as a career and the importance of fostering talent in the industry.

Throughout the four days of the celebration, attendees had the opportunity to engage in insightful discussions, ask questions, and network with fellow professionals. The diverse range of topics covered by the speakers provided attendees with a holistic understanding of pharmacovigilance, from its regulatory aspects to its practical applications. 

In addition to the engaging discussions, a series of activities were also conducted.  For the Poster Making and Quiz Competition at the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), B. Pharm final year students, Dipti, Diya Sharma, and Vaibhav Mamgain, showcased outstanding performance.  The competition was a platform for students to display their knowledge and skills in the ADR reporting and monitoring. The dedication of Diya Sharma, paid off as she secured the first position in this highly competitive event. 

The celebration was a significant milestone in promoting awareness and knowledge sharing in the field of pharmacovigilance. It served as a platform for experts and enthusiasts to come together and exchange valuable insights, fostering the growth of pharmacovigilance practices in the country.
