Weightlifting holds rich historical significance in India. Indian weightlifters have achieved notable success at various levels, brining immense pride to the nation. To elevate Indian contribution to a greater level, one such young achiever — Ishaan Singh — studying in class XI at Apeejay School, Nerul has gained victory in the weightlifting at state level and is now all set to pave the way for nationals.

In an impromptu interview, he highlights his secret ingredients to excel in weightlifting and spots while maintaining his strict diet.

Tell us about yourself and your motivation behind this sport.

I have always been a very sophisticated kind of person. Instantly after the class X, I saw my body was not was not shaping as I had hoped. For the same, I swiftly immersed myself in a transformative journey by hitting the gym. Given the initial state of my physique, I delved into weightlifting as a means of improvement.

It’s just been four months and I have won a medal at the state level. Watching people lift heavy weights in the Olympics gave me enough motivation that one day I also want to perform like them.

What kind of diet do you follow?

I completely rely on a high-protein and high-carb diet. I don’t eat junk food because it has bad fat and cholesterol. I place a significant emphasis on maintaining a disciplined diet, recognising that the right balance of nutrients is paramount for sustaining the energy required for my intense workouts.

Do you practice on your own or have a coach?

I have a personal coach. Having your own coach is extremely important as it plays a vital role. With a dedicated personal coach guiding my fitness journey, I engage in gym workouts four days a week, reserving the remaining three days for cardio activities. Basketball has become a favourite cardio choice, seamlessly blending fitness and enjoyment into my routine.

How do you manage your academics with sports?

Till now there have been no major difficulties but time management has always been one thing. Balancing academics and sports requires the creation of a personalised schedule. Early morning, I dedicate two hours to studying, before going to school. Post-school hours, I go for gym sessions, integrating practice into the day’s agenda. This structured approach allows efficient time management, ensuring ample rest by adhering to a disciplined sleep schedule.

Any mental strategies you follow?

When you are competing with more than 100 people, you must train your mind well and play strategically. I believe in the power of manifestation, which paves way for success. By cultivating confidence and envisioning your victories beforehand, I lay the foundation for achievement in my mind.

Any advice you would like to give to upcoming athletes?

Trust your coaches. Try to manage your time and diet properly. Work hard if you want to pursue a good career in athletics. It’s very important to maintain a clear distinction between academics and sports, recognising that academics serve as my primary profession while sports are pursued as a passion. Focusing on each with precision ensures a balanced and effective approach to both aspects of my life.
