Every young achiever is a reminder that potential is limitless and ambition knows no age. It’s crucial for holistic development to nurture these innate and hidden talents in young people. Institutions such as Apeejay Education offer more than just a robust academic curriculum, whether it’s CBSE or IB; they also provide a platform where students can display their talents.

Meet one such young achiever Janvi Sharma of class VIII at Apeejay School, Tanda Road. The feats of this student are remarkable. Not only has she set down one but two records – first, a certificate from the International Book Of Records- World Record of Excellence for writing the most number of poems written by a teenager, totaling over 200. Second, she has set a world record for solving 207 sums (Addition) in 3 minutes and 27 seconds. Her extraordinary achievement has been duly recognised by Kalam World Records.

In a candid interview, Janvi speaks about her hobbies and how she managed to set a record making her parents and school proud.

You also got a second position in the flower arrangement competition. Tell us about it.

I always believe that participating is more important than winning, as it is more beneficial to learn something new. Participating in competitions like flower arrangements helps enhance our artistic skills, which motivated me to take part. The arrangement I made was simple yet effective. It was a small setup, but I kept experimenting until the last moment. I mainly used roses and emphasised the importance of greenery, which complemented the flowers.

What kind of support did you receive from your teachers for your records and the flower arrangement competition?

My teachers have always been very supportive. They encouraged me not only in writing poems but also in my mathematical skills, which helped me significantly in setting my records. As for the flower arrangement, the teachers encouraged me to participate and try to be creative. It is due to their encouragement that I was adjudged No 2.

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies include writing poetry and dancing, which is one of my favourite activities. I also enjoy reading. Writing has been a passion that I took up when I was in class III and have continued to write extensively.

How did you practice for the Math record?

I used the Abacus method, which I learnt from a young age; I started learning Abacus in class II. I have since graduated from my Abacus course but continue to practice the skills I’ve learnt. For the record, I practiced a few times before I sat down to record the feat. Some of the sums were of three digits and others were higher. I am happy that I was able to set a record.

What advice would you give to students interested in learning Abacus?

Abacus is a much faster way to perform addition, which is very helpful, especially in higher grades where managing time during exams is crucial. It helps ensure accurate calculations quickly.

What are your plans?

I aspire to take the Civil Services exam; I want to become an IPS officer and serve my country. However, I would also want to continue writing poetry as a part-time pursuit alongside my career.
