Human values are a critical part of students’ lives today, providing them with the moral and ethical framework they need to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world. These values provide a foundation for personal development, social interactions, and responsible citizenship. In the modern world, where students are exposed to diverse cultures, technologies, and ideologies, the importance of human values can’t be overstated.

Values like honesty, integrity, empathy, and perseverance are the building blocks of a strong character. They help students develop a sense of right and wrong, guiding their behaviour and decision-making. These values foster ethical behaviour and moral reasoning, which are essential in all aspects of life. Meet one such student – Shaleen Kalra, a student at Apeejay School, Model Town, Jalandhar – who was recently conferred with the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values.

In a candid interview, this class VIII student talks about how others can do an act of kindness.

What was your reaction when you came to know that were getting this award?

To be honest, I had no idea that I was being conferred this prestigious award. On October 4, 2023 – Founder’s Day, I saw my mother walk in while we were in the assembly. I wondered what she was doing there. It was then announced that the names of Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values were being declared. When my name was called out, I was on cloud nine. I was so thrilled and excited!

Did you know about these awards before your name was nominated?

Yes. I knew about these awards when I was in class VII. Sadly, I was not fortunate enough to get this award. So I vowed that I would do better whenever my name would be nominated next. I am happy that my teachers recommended my name again this year.

What inspires you about Dr Stya Paul?

Last year, I enacted the role of Dr Stya Paul for a play that the school held on Founder’s Day. At that time, I came to know so many things about his life and the struggles he underwent just to get an education. However, he never gave up. And this perseverance and hard work is the most inspirational aspect of Dr Paul’s life.

How would you define human values?

Human values are an embodiment of the values that he sets. While these are more internal than external, these values can become a guide for others to follow as well. It is not as if there has to be one value to inculcate in life. We must strive to be kind, empathetic, truthful, and honest.

How do you practice these in real life?

They may be big words and while difficult to practice in real life, with time things become easy. For instance, a couple of days back, a friend got injured while we were playing in the park in the evening. My friend was bleeding. While everyone else gathered around him. I quickly called his mother and appraised her of the situation. We then helped our friend walk to his home where his mother tended to him. All the time I stood nearby in case there was something that I could do to help.

Are you part of charity work as well?

Yes, I am. Every year on my birthday, I go to a nearby ashram with my father and distribute tea and biscuits to the people there – be it the elderly or kids. I have been doing this since I turned a year old. While I was too young to help then, I do so now.

How has the school helped you strengthen human values?

My friends have been my pillar of strength. They always encourage me and motivate me to do things. Our principal sir, headmistress ma’am, and my teachers have been extremely supportive all through since the time I joined the school in class I.

What is that one act of kindness that you would recommend others do?

I would set my example and tell them to see what I do for others. I would tell them my stories. Story-telling is a powerful tool that can motivate anyone.
