Nationwide digital crop survey with AI integration

The government in India is set to revolutionise its agricultural statistics with a nationwide implementation of routine digital crop surveys supported by advanced analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The aim is to address the longstanding issue of unreliable agricultural data which has often led to erratic government policies and trade disruptions due to inaccurate forecasting. Traditionally, officials have relied on local reports and field surveys for crop sowing data, but these methods have proven inconsistent.

To improve accuracy, state officials will use a mobile application and web platforms to conduct digital crop surveys. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare plans to integrate cutting-edge technologies like visual and advanced analytics, GIS-GPS, and AI/ML into the crop survey system.

Last year, a pilot digital crop survey was conducted in 12 states including Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. These states were chosen based on their readiness, including criteria like geo-referencing of village maps and digitisation of land ownership records.

The objective is to enhance farm production forecasts and facilitate timely trade policy decisions by leveraging accurate data. The envisioned digital crop survey will provide real-time and accurate information on crop acreage, allowing for better decision-making in agriculture and trade policy. By harnessing AI and advanced analytics, the government seeks to optimise its response to market dynamics and improve the efficiency of agricultural interventions.

This transformation in agricultural statistics signals a shift towards data-driven governance in India’s agriculture sector, promising more informed and effective policies that can benefit farmers and consumers alike. The nationwide rollout of digital crop surveys will be a crucial step towards modernising the country’s agricultural data infrastructure.
