CBSE: Class 10 Basic Math students can now pursue advanced courses in Class 11

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has implemented a new policy aimed at easing the path for students transitioning from class X to class XI. Under this policy, students who opted for Basic Mathematics in class X will now have the opportunity to pursue Mathematics as a full-fledged subject in class XI. Previously, students who chose Basic Mathematics in class X were restricted from continuing with the subject in subsequent classes and were only eligible to select applied math courses.

In a recent announcement, CBSE revealed that this revised rule will be applicable for the academic session 2024-2025, aligning with ongoing changes influenced by the National Education Policy (NEP). The decision reflects CBSE’s commitment to facilitating smoother academic transitions and providing students with more flexibility in choosing their subjects.

However, schools retain the authority to assess students’ readiness and suitability for Mathematics at the senior level. The notification emphasises that schools must ensure that students possess the requisite aptitude and capability to pursue Mathematics Standard (041) in class XI. School administrations are instructed to thoroughly evaluate students’ mathematical abilities before permitting them to enroll in the standard Mathematics course.

It is noteworthy that once students finalize their subject selections through the List of Candidates (LOC), changes will not be permitted thereafter. Consequently, students are advised to make well-considered choices when selecting their academic options.

This development underscores CBSE’s efforts to adapt its educational framework to evolving pedagogical principles outlined in the NEP. By extending this flexibility, CBSE aims to empower students to make informed decisions regarding their academic pursuits and ensure a seamless progression from one educational level to the next.
