OpenAI has partnered with Reddit for access to real-time content from Reddit’s data API, allowing discussions from the site to be integrated into ChatGPT and other products. This arrangement mirrors a similar deal Reddit made with Google, reportedly valued at $60 million. The collaboration will also enable Reddit to implement AI-powered features for users and moderators, utilising OpenAI’s large language models to develop new applications. OpenAI has also become an advertising partner on Reddit.

This partnership comes amidst a backdrop of user unrest over Reddit’s API pricing changes, which led to a blackout of over 7,000 subreddits in June 2023. The user reaction to this new partnership remains to be seen.
A recent partnership between OpenAI and Stack Overflow resulted in suspensions for users attempting to delete their posts, reflecting a growing concern over data usage.
Neither OpenAI nor Reddit disclosed financial terms in their announcement, and there was no mention of using the data for training models, a notable omission compared to the Google deal.
Reddit has pointed out that its vast collection of human conversations serves as a valuable resource for ChatGPT, emphasising the interconnected nature of the Internet and the potential for attracting new community members.
