Today’s Gen Z is not satisfied with only achieving outstanding academic results. They want to do so much more. Just becoming excellent in their profession is but one part of what they dream of. What is important for them is to be good human beings as well. And for this, they will go the extra mile and adopt values that differentiate them and make a positive difference.

Meet one such student – Abhilasha Chatterjee, from academic year 2024-25, a class X (now Class XI) student at Apeejay School, Saket. In a candid interview, she talks about what human values mean to her.

How did you feel when you found out?

It was during a normal working day when I found out that I was shortlisted for the award. I was excited, so happy, and shocked at the same time. It is such an honour to win this award. The award is so much more special because I was nominated twice earlier but didn’t make it to the final selection list.

Can you take us through the selection process for the award?

Initially, a group of students was selected for the first round, which was an oral interview. After that, a few students were shortlisted for the next round, which was also an oral interview conducted by our Vice-principal and the Principal. Finally, the remaining shortlisted students had to take a written test. Based on that, the recipients were announced.

Tell us about yourself.

I am at present, in class X and have been with this school from the start. Since my childhood, I’ve been eager to learn and explore new things. I enjoy painting, listening to music, and singing at times. In class XI, I aspire to take PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics). As of now, I’m inclined toward engineering.

What do human values mean to you?

To me, human values are the basic virtues that define a person and make a human being truly humane. Everything we think and feel is based on our beliefs and values. These values shape our decisions, which, in turn, shape how we think and who we are as individuals.

Do you think it is difficult to live by these values in today’s world?

I believe that the kind of environment and people you are surrounded with play an important role in how you act. It can be challenging at times to contribute to the well-being of society, especially because of peer pressure or situations where it’s hard to distinguish between what’s good and what’s right. However, the key is to stay true to your values and beliefs while being considerate of others’ feelings and emotions.

Are you involved in any kind of charity or social work?

Nothing major at the moment, but every year on my birthday, we make it a point to feed some underprivileged people. Mainly, we reach out to people on the streets. Sometimes, we also donate old clothes to an orphanage.

What kind of values have your parents instilled in you?

My parents have always encouraged me to strive hard and become a better version of myself. They emphasise values like integrity, respect, compassion, and gratitude.

What role have your school and teachers played in shaping the person you are today?

Apeejay Schools place equal importance on developing moral integrity as well as academic and holistic development. The teachers emphasise discipline, sympathy, and empathy. We also have several activities and clubs aimed at creating a positive impact. The teachers are very supportive and approachable — they often come to us to discuss any challenges we face as students.
